Sixteen Years Later
Lily’s POV
“Lily” Taylor called from inside the house “Dinner will be ready in half an hour, so don’t go anywhere”
“No worries big bro” I shout back at him.
I get up off the front step of the porch where I have been sitting all afternoon, since we got home from camp, and wander over to the edge of the cliff that our house is situated on. I sit down, dangling my bare feet over the edge and gazing down at the 50ft drop below.
While I rest on the cliff edge I think back to the last two weeks, a whole bunch of firsts for me. The first time I have ever been at camp, and the first time they have every let me go off without my brothers or a government official for more than one or two nights. 12 whole days of freedom. New friends, new games and of course, John. We both knew that it wouldn’t last past camp but still the moments we had spent together were the best memories from camp. I remember the first night of camp clear as day in my head when the 18 of us were all sitting by the lake side and playing spin the bottle and when he spun it and it landed on me, and of course when we spent the rest of the night making out under the trees next to the lake instead of continuing to play.
It had been so new for me to be able to trust someone, but I know that it only worked because it was for such a short time. How else could I ever be in a relationship with someone, no one can ever know about my wings, they can never know about my past, how could a be with someone who can never see me for who I am.
“Lily” Taylor’s voice broke through my thoughts. “Come on, dinners ready!”
I stood up and ran inside, stopping to wash my hands in the bathroom. I walked into the kitchen where my three brothers were sitting at the table. Taking a seat next to my twin brother, James, I smiled around at all of them.
“Hey little sis, long time no see” said Hunter.
“I’ve missed you bud!” I said “I wish you could have picked me up too, but work is more important.”
“But what about you mister” I said jokingly, poking James on the arm “where were you when Taylor picked me up, what could be more important than your sister?”
“Oh I assure you” he said sarcastically “nothing could be more important than my sister. However I too have gotten a job at the scoops, the ice cream parlor at the resort at the bottom of the cliff.”
“Oh whatever” I muttered, sticking my tongue out at him. “Can we eat? Im starved”
I grabbed my bowl of macaroni and cheese, homemade by Taylor the master chef never from a box when he is around. I took a big bite of the gooey pasta.
“Mmmmm” I sighed, “I sure missed this while I was at camp”
“Thanks little sis” Taylor said laughing.
“So what’s the plan for tomorrow?” I asked, “We only have a few days before school starts and I need to get some new stuff.”
“Well, I was thinking you and James could fly down to town tomorrow to pick up the things you need.” Said Hunter
“And don’t forget we are leaving tomorrow to go home” said Taylor.
“Okay” James and I said together.
We finished dinner making casual conversation and then I went upstairs to gather my stuff together to go back home tomorrow night. During the summer we were required to stay in this house so as to hide out wings from the neighbors, no swim suits and tank tops for us down there but up here with no one to see we could be ourselves.
I opened all the drawers and closets in my room and began to take out my clothes, packing them away in my suitcase. When I was done i zipped it up and walked over to look out the window.
It was dusk and the sky was just begining to darken. It had been so long since I had been able to fly so I walked outside and went to stand on the edge of the cliff.
I extended my wings, a deep amber color with specks of red feathers mixed in. I pumped them a few times, stirring up the air around me, bringing sweet smells of forest pine trees, flowers and camp fires all combined to my nose. I breathed in deeply then stepping to the edge I jumped off.
I allowed myself a few seconds of pure freefall and then with a few pumps of my wings I was flying.
