start out with the prettiest being you can find, make them brilliant [forget smart and tactful, people don't want flaws, they want beautifully outrageous lies]: eyelashes dipped in pure gold [dripping and full, even in sadness or grief - which emotion was which, you'd never know], fingertips doused in sugar [scraping at your lips, leaving dangerously sweet tastes behind - was it them you were in love with, or just the simple afterglow?], their touch needs to make buds bloom [life needs to practically seep from their every pore, how else will they convince you to love them? how else will they let you know they can make something just as good as you if there'd ever arise the need?].
then i'd recommend a good tragedy - it's not mandatory but it gets people's hearts fluttering, makes them practically ache to love them - think icarus or echo, those only looking for love and getting nothing but disappointment in return. if their trials seem fateless and their dreams unachievable, people will believe they're just like them [willing to sacrifice comfort for the greater things of life].
next make them callous and cruel [but only slightly so, they have to convince you to give them your heart before they drain it of all feeling] make them hate the very mortality that you're destined to be. make the silks of their sheets turn to rust just from the acidity of their smile [as long as you feel safe there's no reason to question why the softness has turned rough].
lastly, reevaluate the criteria of a god: are they even worth worshipping at all? or do we put our faith into beings that drip good looks and holiness for the simple truths of comfort? think of all the little in betweens that humans go through, just think about it - is dying after gasps of your last breath really living at all? if it isn't, what's the point of gods at all [except to entertain themselves, they sure aren't entertaining me]? and if it is, well, i'm not sure you're ready to comprehend that possibility yet.
[you'd be surprised how similar gods are to mortals, are there even gods at all?]
