After running a few errands, I head on my way to meet up with Dylan. I drive with the windows rolled down, listening to music and singing along as if I don't have a care in the world. In fact, maybe I'm a little too into listening to my music. I reach to run up the radio as one of my favorite songs comes on, adjusting my sunglasses before resting my hand out of the window, hair blowing with the wind as I sing my heart out.
Not paying nearly enough attention as I should to what I'm doing, I don't notice when my foot starts to get a little too heavy on the gas pedal, nearing eighty on an old back road I'm using to cut short my drive. The road feels rough beneath my tires as I pick up speed, though I ignore this as I drum my fingertips against the steering wheel, dismissing pebbles and holes in the dirt to the best of my ability.
It isn't until I speed over a large rock protruding from the dirt and begin to sink into a deep hole paved into the worn road that I realize my mistake.
I press down on the brake and shoot forward, abruptly stopping the car. I turn off the radio, my heart racing as I realize how recklessly I'd been driving. Regaining my composure, I slowly ease my foot down on the gas pedal to bring my tire out of the hole it's currently stuck in, trying to be careful.
I drive forward only once I'm certain my tires are no longer stuck, only to find that something still doesn't seem right. I can immediately tell that there is something wrong with my back tires, so I slow to a stop and park the car before I get out to examine the damage.
Reaching the rear end of my car, it takes one glance to be able to see that my back tiers are flat. I curse under my breath as I run a hand through my hair, shaking my head at my own stupidity. I wander back over to the driver's side and reach for my phone, climbing into my seat and pulling out of the spot I'd been parked in.
"Hey," I say when Dylan picks up my call. "I think I'm going to be a little late."
