"You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams."
-Theodor Geisel
Falling in love is always a surprise, right?
I don't usually like surprises, but I'll tell you that there is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being in love.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
I can feel his glowing eyes on the side of my face. I meet those eyes of his with mine. They are dancing.
His are.
Mine are swimming.
"Like what?" His amused smile sends heat to my cheeks.
He knows how he was looking at me. He was looking at me like I just said something funny.
I hadn't even said anything. I probably looked tired just staring at all these people walk by in a rushed way. I hadn't said one word since we got to this damn airport.
John F Kennedy International Airport; the team's plane boards from here.
Travis asked me to come with him, just this morning. At six am to be exact. True story.
He had called me up and the dreadfully loud ringtone of mine startled me awake from a steady sleep. (I would be lying if I said I wasn't dreaming of Travis.)
"Hello?" I had said groggily. I hadn't checked the caller ID; hadn't opened my eyes even.
"Hey sleepy head," came the familiar, jovial voice. It was six am.
I rolled over onto my back and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. "Travis?" A yawn escaped my lips.
"Do you wanna come to the airport with me?" He was very casual about all this.
I nodded and then remembered he couldn't see me. "Absolutely." I still didn't opened my eyes. "What time will you be coming by?"
He didn't miss a beat, didn't miss a damn beat. "I'm here now actually."
I groaned but he knows and I know that I wasn't actually complaining. "I'll be right down."
I look like the second coming of a tragic mess. But you know what he said to me as I got into his car?
"You look cute, Ardy."
I give him a look and he laughs. "What? You look all sleepy and adorable, like a little baby."
If I looked great, then he must be a supermodel. There was something about the way he looked in a sleek suit that made me swoon.
"Like a baby, huh?"
He nods. "Yeah... a snuggly little baby."
I had to sneak out very carefully.
He sighs deeply next to me, but when I look over at him, he is grinning. He's the only person I know that would be smiling this early in the morning at a crowded airport, and the only person I know that can make a sigh sound so blissful.
"What's up with you?" A yawn escapes from me and I cover my mouth with the sleeve of my coat. I believe it's property of my brother; I had grabbed the first one I saw in the downstairs closet.
"What do you mean? Nothing's up." He's so chipper this morning that I can't believe that nothing is going on.
"I was thinking about you last night," he states, that smile still on his face and his eyes glowing brighter than ever. The sun burns. I'm back to the airport lounge, on the hard plastic chair.
