From the way the Professor greeted Hop and Leon, it was clear that she knew them beforehand. Gloria and you stood off to the side, a little awkwardly.
Then, Leon started talking about a thing called Dynamaxing. You could have sworn you heard the word before but it didn't really spring to mind where.
Hop then talked about getting an endorsement for the Gym Challenges and if those around you had been looking at you, they could have practically seen the question marks floating around your head. For some reason, things didn't seem to want to stick like they usually did.
Professor Magnolia noticed and, while all the others went outside, she placed her hand on your forearm reassuringly; actively snapping you out of your confusion spiral.
"Let's go outside and watch those two young trainers battle. I can explain some of this to you there, if you want."
You, still in confusion, allowed the Professor to herd you outside as if you were a Wooloo.
"...So show me something good in this battle!" Leon told Gloria and Hop who were standing on the battle field, as you and Magnolia came to stand by him.
"Ok, so what are they doing?" You whispered to Magnolia as Hop and Gloria sent out Pokémon, making her chuckle.
"Those two are now fighting for who gets an endorsement from the Champion."
"Aaah." You said thoughtfully, looking at the battle before leaning towards the Professor again. "What-"
"An endorsement allows a trainer to partake in the Gym Challenge." Magnolia interrupted you before you could speak your question and you clicked your tongue.
"You need a fancy letter to participate? That seems overly difficult." You muttered to yourself but Magnolia heard.
"The Gym Challenge is the greatest challenge a trainer can partake in Galar. You need to be strong and have promise to participate. Therefore, needing an endorsement makes sure that trainers that participate are truly ready for the challenge."
Gloria's Chewtle took out Hop's Wooloo as the Professor explained it to you, and the fight was truly underway. Hop sent out Grookey next, giving him the type advantage.
"Of course, most challengers still don't make it to the end." Magnolia then said, right as Grookey took out Chewtle.
Gloria sent out a Nickit while you contemplated all that the Professor had said. Seeing as to how she just said she wanted to watch the fight, you decided to keep your questions about Dynamaxing for later.
Grookey was able to take out Gloria's nickit as well, although it seemed really hurt. Next up, Gloria sent out Scorbunny and Grookey fainted when hit with a super effective attack from the fire type.
Hop quickly sent out his last Pokémon, a Rookidee. With no other Pokémon to switch to, Gloria kept Scorbunny out and the final stretch of the battle began.
In the end, Gloria beat Hop again. The boy slumped in defeat but quickly stood up again. You smiled a little to yourself. He really didn't let anything bring him down.
Leon walked forward, looking at both of the trainers. "Well, after seeing a match like that one, I suppose I've little choice but to give you both an endorsement as Champion."
You gasped at the sly trick Leon pulled and shared a look with Professor Magnolia, who shook her head teasingly; she had clearly expected this.
Suddenly, Hop yelled, looking at the sky. You looked up just in time to see a red comet crash down into the ground. Or at least, fall down. It wasn't even big or fast enough to leave a crater.
