Claire was walking to her 4th-period class as Fortydust's "Hard Drive" played through her headphones. Her head bobbed to the beat, loving the way that Harley's gritty vocals rang in her ears. Millie's soft harmonies in the background contrasted with the edgy electric guitar and all Claire could think about was how much she loved this band. They were easily the most talented band out there right now and she'd recently gotten all of her friends into them.
As soon as she entered the classroom, Evan, aka the most annoying kid in her class smirked. "Hey, Claire." He said in a nasally tone.
"Hi, Evan." She responded, not looking up from her phone while sitting down next to him. Yeah, she was stuck next to him for the entire year. "So you're not gonna tell me who you're listening to?" Claire wanted to wipe the shit-eating grin off his face.
"You know who I'm listening to, Evan." "I just wanna hear you say it," He shrugged, "So we can debate again." "I don't want to fight with you before every class period."
"I just don't get why you think-" "Evan!" She rolled her eyes, "I said I don't wanna fight with you." "B-but can you just answer me one thing?" Claire took a deep breath, hoping he'd leave her alone after this. "Fine, fine. But make it quick." "See look, you just made my day," He smiled, "Ok, as I was saying, I just don't get how you think that Harley is a better rapper than THE Kevin Abstract. Have you heard his verses?"
"No, not really. I don't listen to Brockhampton much." "See, that's the problem. Go listen to them." "Only if you go listen to Fortydust." Evan's eyes practically bugged out of his head before he snorted. "No, no. I can't do that."
"Why not?" She turned her seat to him fully, crossing her arms over her chest. "They're mortal fucking enemies. Big time rivals." "And why's that?" Claire smirked smugly. "Because Harley's too immature to take a joke and now the fan bases hate each other." "Dude, what?" Claire laughed dryly, "Kevin's the one who started the beef between them. He shouldn't have made that joke."
"Claire, it was a harmless joke." Evan shook his head, still smirking, but she huffed. "No, it wasn't. Kevin basically insinuated that Fortydust could never be better than Brockhampton. It's not funny." "You seem a little uptight, Claire. Take a few deep breaths and then join the dark side." Evan wiggled his eyebrows.
"You're so annoying." "Annoying, but I also listen to the best band in the world." "Wrong, I listen to the best band in the world."
"Are you guys seriously talking about this again?" Milo, another kid in their class, turned around to them. "Yes, Milo." Claire and Evan both said at the same time. "Jesus," He held his hands up, "I just wanted to say that it's really fucking stupid and you should listen to both of them. They probably just have fake beef for clout, anyway."
"Brockhampton would never do that." "Neither would Fortydust." "Whatever," Milo just laughed at them with a shake of his head, "You guys aren't gonna believe this, then." "What?" Claire's eyebrows furrowed together as Milo opened up one of his Spotify playlists.
"I have a song by Fortydust and then one by Brockhampton right after." Evan and Claire both gasped. "February 1848" by Fortydust blatantly stared Claire in the face before her eyes roamed down to Brockhampton's song "Heat."
"No." Evan shook his head in disbelief. "You guys are scaring me." Milo said with a laugh before turning back around. Claire was about to do the same before she felt a hand on her arm. "No but seriously, you never answered the question," Evan stopped her, "Do you genuinely think Harley's a better rapper than Kevin?" "Evan, I'm a huge Fortydust fan. What do you think?" "That's blasphemy!" He gasped and Claire had had enough.
"No, you know what's blasphemy? You and your stupid favorite band in the world who-" "Claire, Evan," Their teacher stopped them, "We're starting class now if that's okay with you both." "Yes, sorry, Mr. Melvin." Claire felt her face heat before she turned to Evan with a glare.
And he was glaring right back.
