The next time I woke, I thankfully was in bed and not on the couch. It was 10 AM and since my grandparents had been out of their beds since 8 AM or earlier, let’s just say I got to sleep in. I went downstairs and he table was already set, quite extravagantly. There was a lot of food, good food, and there were nice plates and nice drinks and it just looked really happy and nice and I almost felt guilty for coming in my sweatshirt and leggings and ugly hair.

“Well, we wanted to make it a fun day, so why not start it off with some good food?” My granddad said in his jolly voice. “The weather may be a bit gray, but we’ll turn it into a good day.”

“Granddad,” I walked over to kiss his cheek, “you should become a poet. I bet you and Tyler would get along greatly.” I felt my cheeks heat up at the look my grandma gave me when I dropped the name Tyler. Should not have done that. Should not have done that. Grandma probably saw me staring at the table in shame and thankfully she didn’t say anything. I sat down at the table and we started eating.

“I haven’t been to the zoo in ages,” my granddad said, “I’m excited though, I wonder if it changed a lot.”

“The last time I went to the zoo was before I even left Seattle… I must have been like nine or ten, I don’t even remember it I guess. But I’m excited too. Sorry for not getting out of bed earlier though, maybe that would’ve been a good idea.”

“Oh don’t worry dear, you really needed the sleep. And the end of the movie wasn;t good anyways, so you didn’t really miss anything. You look a lot less tired today to be honest.” Grandma smiled while rubbing my shoulder.

“We weren’t sure whether we had to wake you or drag you upstairs or what, but this seemed like the best idea and I hope it wasn’t too cold.” Granddad said, to which grandma added how skinny I was so they added an extra blanket and “Oh Jenna, have this bun too, you should really eat well” oh, grandparents and their food.

I went upstairs, got dressed and did my hair and make-up. I texted a bit with my mom and had a reply from Audrey again. “Okay cool :) we’re hanging out with the boyfriends today.” I wished them fun, then put my phone away and went back downstairs. I offered to drive us to the zoo, but granddad insisted on driving us so I just went on social media in the back seat of the car. The zoo my grandparents had chosen was pretty far away, but it was honestly fine by me. I enjoyed sitting in the back of the car with my phone or a good book and some music. My granddad let me plug my phone into his car radio –I was honestly surprised he knew that was possible- and at basically every single song my grandma asked “Oh is this that band that the boy is in?” and she got more disappointed every time I said that it wasn’t, until Johnny Boy started playing. My grandparents both really enjoyed the song and didn’t really listen to the lyrics, or at least didn’t make any remarks on them.

“I really like this song, Jenna.” My granddad said. Grandma turned to face me and nodded, while she did so I saw her search for the look on my face. I just showed her my happiness, that was really all I wanted to do today, be happy.

We entered the zoo and were soon greeted by the penguins. The zoo was actually pretty cool and it was categorized in different sections for different kind of animals. There was a desert, an ocean, a tropical area, et cetera. We decided to go to the desert first, which was mostly just filled with some lizards behind glass and a lot of cactuses. My granddad really liked cactuses though, for some reason. It was pretty great to see him happy and I mean, watching the lizards wasn’t too bad. Grandma mostly just seemed to enjoy being out of the house, and she always liked to take pictures, so I would probably also get my fair share of me looking at things today.

It was a calm day at the zoo, or at least I think it was. I don’t know how many people there usually are but it just seemed very uncrowded. Thankfully, there weren’t any screaming and running kids, except for a few 6 year olds who were too invested looking at everything.

After spending some more time in the desert area and spending some time in the park, which also had some animals that weren’t really categorized, we went to the ocean section. I remembered it from when I was younger, it had always been my favorite part of the zoo. At first it was just some sort of cave thingy with some smaller aquariums, but after a while you’d walk through a tunnel and fish and sharks would be all around you. I loved that tunnel. My grandma went in first, taking numerous pictures and I caught myself snapping quite a lot of pictures too. Granddad just looked at everything and wrapped his arm over my shoulder, like he had when I was younger.

When we were through the tunnel, we entered the new part of the ocean section. It was very different from what it used to be, but so much better. It was some sort of cave and it smelled kind of weird but it had stone benches, on which me and my grandparents sat down. There wasn’t anyone else around, so there was plenty of choice. In front of us was a gigantic wall of glass, behind it huge fish and sharks swimming. It was cool to see the anemones and it looked really surreal to see the animals in a habitat like that. We took the opportunity to eat some food from granddads backpack while staring into the ocean.

Suddenly, grandma figured it was necessary to break the silence.

“Jenna, why didn’t you take any of your friends here? There were those two girls right? Your mom told us something about them. They seemed pretty nice!” She asked. Great.

“I don’t know, to be honest. First of all, it’s cool to spend this time as some family time, you know? Like, if they were really great friends of mine, it’d be fine, but that’s the point. They’re not really that great.”

“They don’t try to bring you down do they?” Granddad asked in a concerned voice.

“No, no, that isn’t it, it’s just, they don’t really like anything I like, and I don’t like most things they like, but whenever I like something, they usually don’t even take the time to try and see why I like it so much. They’re always so …negative over things that I like. Or just really disinterested. Like, they barely even knew I was going here. Plus, they always want to hang out with their boyfriends.”

“And you don’t have one.” Granddad added silently.

“And I don’t have one.” I replied, sighing deep.

“But don’t worry, you will get one, dear.” Grandma winked.
