I jump when I hear a knock at my door.
"Mary. Mary are you alright."
Sterling whispers from the othe side of the door. Not wanting him to see any of this, I walk towards the door.
"I just had a nightmare, but I'm okay now."
I work hard to keep my voice even. I close my eyes so I don't see all the blood. He's quite for a moment then says.
"Oh alright. Are you sure? Do you want me to come in?"
He starts to to turn the doorknob.
"Don't come in it's not proper Please leave just go. I don't want to see you anymore."
I say in a panic. I calm a little when I hear his foot steps become fainter.
Oh lord, what did I do. The one I person I had just begun to trust. And what do. I push him away. Once a outcast always a outcast. I was naive for thinking things could be different.
I need to figure out what happened, but first I have to clean up. I can only imagine if anyone found me in here. They would think me the wolf. I laugh at the silly idea.
I take off my dress and hood. The white dress is stained but the cape looks the same, that's odd. I through the dress in the fire. I look in the corner at the bloody rabbit. What is the world am I going to do with it. I'll take care of it later.
I head outside to get a bucket of water to wash some blood of my stuff. Thanking the lord it's night as I creep to the well.
I return without any trouble. I scrub the floors were the blood was. Once I'm done I have a bucket full of bloody water in one hand, and dead rabbit in the other. I look around and I can barely tell anything had happened here. I head outside to throw away the rabbit. I see Sammy laying on the ground unmoving. I run to wall and throw the rabbit over. It barley makes it over. I dump the water and run back to Sammy.
He is unconscious when I reach him. He has no bite marks and no sign of bleeding. I shake his shoulders.
"Sammy, Wake up!"
I say to him. Sammy is the only son of the stable keeper to some people. To me he is a kind hearted little boy. Who gave me flowers to put on Allison's grave. He doesn't deserve to die. He groans and I breath a sigh of relief.
"Where am I?"
He asks me looking so confused.
"You were passed out in the middle of the road. Do you remember what happened?"
He shakes his head. Then cries out in pain. He holds his head.
"Please make it stop. My head it hurt to much stop."
Fearing for his life and not caring about my own I pick Him up. He's not that big but he sure feels heavy. I walk as fast as I can to our local physician office. I try to knock on the door.
Tap, tap, tap.
Louise McKenna the physician's wife opens the door. She looks at me with sleepy eyes. When she recognizes its me she asks harshly.
"What do you want?"
"Please help Sam, I found him outside my dwelling. He was unconscious. He kept saying his head hurt."
I looked down at Sam. His eyes were open but he didn't say anything. Just then the physician walked in. Sumner McKenna was young for his work. It was a family business and his father had died from a disease which no one knew how to cure. What a sad and ironic way for a physician to die.
"Put him down here."
He pointed at a large wooden table that has one pillow at the far end if it. I walk over and gently put Sammy down. As I Sumner examines him. He makes little comments. None of which I even half understand.
"He was hit over the head something. It happened recently."
He looks at me suspiciously. I haven't done anything wrong, but when people look at me like this I have a tendency to look guilty. I try to look guilty but it doesn't work.
"I didn't do this to him, if that's what you're implying."
"What were you doing outside anyway?"
He keep a suspicious look in his face. Can he just stop giving me that look.
"None of you business."
He ignores the sharpness of my voice and turns to Sammy. Who looks so confused and scared.
"Who did this to you?"
Summer asks Sammy in a gentle voice. Sammy looks around then his eyes settle on mine.
"She did, Mary."
He's says then passes out. Sumner checks his pulse. He shakes his head.
"He is dead."
Fear overwhelms me. I need to get out of here. These people already hate me now the have a reason to hurt me. Even if it's the words of a delirious child. I start to back up slowly. Watching Sumner very carefully.
"No, I didn't do this I swear."
I turn to run but trip in a piece of firewood. I fall to the ground hard. Hitting my head on a table end. My body feels fuzzy and light. I try to get up but Sumner I already pulling my arm up.
"Mary Andre, I place you under citizens arrest for harming a innocent child. You will be executed in the morning."
