"I want to tell you," I say strongly to her.
She doesn't say anything but nods sweetly for me to go on. I take a long breathe and start the story.
"When I was young, like around 5, our family was sort of normal. Joanna loved her drugs, but our dad never let that get to us. Whenever she went extra crazy, he stopped her." I say and she holds my hand to assure me she was here.
And I felt comforted with her.
"But when my dad died of a heart attack caused by stress, everything changed for the worse. I guess all the stress he got from Joanna ruined him." I speak.
"After he passed, she got worse. And it wasn't because she missed him. It was because now she had to take care of bills, and us, which she was never capable of."
"She got a job at the grocery store and as soon as she got home, she got drunk. One day I was out playing baseball and when I came home, I went to get Aubrey, because whenever she missed dad, we would watch a movie together that our dad watched with us."
"But when I came home and went to her room, she had scars all over her and she wouldn't stop crying. I begged her to talk to me, but after that day she didn't speak to anyone."
"When she started school, she used to be away from Joanna, so I could tell she was happier. And the day she finally almost uttered a word, Joanna got extra drunk again,"
Her hands rubbed over my skin, encouraging me to go on, so I did.
"She came to Aubrey's room with a belt, and before she could hit her, I jumped in the way. She hit me. And after that, it became a routine."
"I'd know what time to go home because I knew what time she would start hitting. And I was so young that I couldn't do anything to stop her," I say, my voice breaking.
"When Aubrey felt a bit more safe when I started taking her to the park, she spoke to me. She cried, a lot. She told me how much she hated her. She told me she didn't want to step into that place ever again."
"So, I made sure she wouldn't be there. My dad had a really close friend from work, and when he introduced us, we got along with the friend's kids. We got really close like they were a second family, so I asked them to help Aubrey, which they were more than happy to do,"
"When I grew up and got stronger to handle her, I didn't hit or anything, I just stopped her hand before she touched one of us. Then she started dating random guys and married a lot of them."
"I rushed to get Aubrey and I out of there because sometimes, the husband of the week would try to hit us. And sometimes, I was too weak to stop him. Then UCLA came, and we've been free of the devil ever since. Well till now," I end off.
In the process of it, I guess I shed some tears, so Brynn stared running her thumbs over them, wiping them from my face.
"You were very strong. You did everything to protect you and your sister at such a young age. You were never weak Blake," she whispers and I kiss her.
Her words were soothing and it felt good telling her. She knew a part of me that no one knew and I wouldn't have it any other way.
"Can I ask you something?" I whisper.
"Sure."
"Why don't you celebrate Thanksgiving with your family?" I ask.
She looks down to her lap and plays with her fingers, before she starts talking. "My family is of me, my mom, my dad and my older brother."
"My mom wasn't abusive or anything. But she and I were never close. She was closer to my brother and would do anything for him, but her mood when it came to me was never the same."
"She would yell at me for no reason. She would put me down with her words, and it was all to negative for me there,"
I clench my jaw at the thought of Brynn being hurt. But run my hands through her hair for her to go on.
"My dad was all too busy at work, but once he got home, he would only really care for my brother. Just like her."
"Then when I got into UCLA, I felt like I really did something, you know?" She bites out a small laugh. "But then when I told them, they didn't really seem to care. Then, a couple days later, they told me I had to pay on my own," she says.
At our age, my dad left us all of his money. And as far as Joanna knew, he was having finance problems because he didn't leave her any. I couldn't imagine having to get all that money on my own.
"So, I got in through scholarship and started working jobs to make money. Lila always wanted to pay for me, but I just told her no. After a lot of convincing, her parents insisted on paying for dorms at least." She says and I realize that was the end of the story.
It fucking felt horrible knowing Brynn was treated like that. I absolutely hate it. But it also shows how strong she is. And I admired her all too much for that.
"I love you Brynn. You don't realize how much," I pull her closer to me.
I never wanted to be away from her. I only want to have her in my arms.
That stupid place Joanna was in with us, was never our place. All there is there are memories of my father, but like I said, that place isn't my home.
She's my home. Brynn Kelsey. The love of my life.
"Ok, ice-cream time?" She pleads with a pouty lip like a baby and I nod. "Let's go!" I cheer pulling her hand with me into the store.
Guess I have studying to thank for getting her? If I hadn't needed the smartest girl I met to tutor me, I wouldn't have met her. Although she probably hated it, she had to tutor me.
And in return for it,
I got her.
