Hiccup took a step back towards the cavern with caged dragons. Alvin took a step forwards.
"What's the matter, my boy? Surely you realised this was coming." Alvin held out his sword towards Hiccup, pointing it at his chest.
Before Hiccup could respond, Alvin lunged. Hiccup ducked and ran to the side. He grabbed a sword from the wrack and almost dropped it due to its weight.
Alvin chuckled, walking forwards. His sword scraped against the cave floor. "Do you really expect to defeat me in my own domain?"
Hiccup held his sword with both hands. "No, but he might."
"What?"
Toothless fired from the darkness, hidden in the shadows. Alvin was blasted off his feet.
"Hiccup!" Astrid reached down. Hiccup took her hand and mounted Toothless.
With a roar, Toothless dived, flying over Alvin and through the cave. Without their torches, Astrid and Hiccup couldn't see.
"Get us out of here, bud," Hiccup whispered.
Alvin threw the sword at them. Astrid kicked it out of the way.
"You're not the only one with dragons, boy!" Alvin screeched.
Metallic clangs echoed through the cave as dragon cages were opened. Hiccup grit his teeth.
Toothless navigated the caves, having to double back when he took the wrong path. The dragons were catching up.
Hiccup squinted in the darkness. "Thunderdrum, two nadders a monstrous nightmare."
Toothless snarled, spinning in the air and firing at the dragons. He hit a nadder as the others dodged. It scrambled up and continued to follow.
"There's too many to take on!" Astrid yelled.
"We have to lead them away from the nests and into the open," Hiccup said.
A magnesium blast shot past them. Toothless growled, speading up. The caves were too small for him to speed up, allowing the other dragons to stay on their tail.
They reached the nests, where they saw the blue deadly nadder and green zippleback. Startled, they tensed.
Toothless shot overhead. The dragons fired at the nadder and zippleback, ignoring the nests and trying to get through. Hiccup didn't manage to spot what the guard dragons were doing as Toothless passed several caverns.
Toothless dived, dodging a magnesium blast. He had an advantage in the dark. Numerous dragons fired randomly, the flames lighting the cave.
Hiccup gritted his teeth. "You got this bud."
Toothless roared, shooting through the air. Light flooded the tunnels from up ahead. They burst out of the cave, diving straight down. The other dragons hovered by the entrance.
Toothless landed on the boulders, avoiding the debris. The trees gave them cover, forming a barrier between them and the blue sky. Nobody moved.
After a moment, the dragons snarled and growled.
"What the-"
The deadly nadder and zippleback burst from the cave, firing at the dragons. There was a short scuffle before Alvin's dragons scattered.
"No one messes with their babies," Astrid said, getting off of Toothless.
The deadly nadder and zippleback settled by the cave entrance. Hiccup relaxed against Toothless.
