Snotlout screamed and rolled to the side. Lightning scorched the earth.

"What are we going to do about that?!"

The skrill vanished into the clouds, flashes of light emerging from above.

Hiccup frowned. "I don't... I don't know."

Toothless groaned, struggling to his feet. He took a couple steps before falling.

Astrid scanned the area, eyes sharp. "We have to improvise. Toothless can't fly, so Hiccup will go with me and Stormfly."

Hiccup nodded. "We have to get them out of the clouds."

Taking Astrid's outstretched arm, Hiccup heaved himself onto Storfmly and settled behind her. Snotlout took off.

"Ready?" Astrid asked, glancing back at him with rosy cheeks.

"Ready," Hiccup murmured.

She passed him a sword, adjusting her grip on her axe. "Good."

Before Hiccup could react, Astrid took off, charging into the sky towards the skrill.

Lightning crackled beside them, above them. A bolt whizzed downwards. Stormfly snarled and dodged. The skrill blasted from above. Astrid pulled back hard as a bolt sliced the air ahead of them.

Snotlout yelled a battle cry, leading Hookfang at the skrill. Fire hit lightning. they vanished into the clouds.

"Snotlout!"

The lightning bolts stopped coming.

Stormfly reached the clouds and shot spines. The skrill roared and dodged, Snotlout close behind.

"You!" Alvin bellowed, voice shrill.

The skrill dived and, just for a moment, Alvin's eyes met Hiccup's. They were furious, piercing, wild.

Hiccup tightened his grip on Astrid's shoulders. "We have to get above them."

"On it!"

Snotlout shot twice, forcing Alvin to dodge. Electricity hummed in the air. Astrid sent a blast that missed. Alvin kicked the skrill. It shrieked, firing down at Snotlout.

One. A dodge.

Two. A close call.

Three. A hit.

Snotlout screamed as Hookfang convulsed, falling out of the clouds.

"No!"

Astrid urged Stormfly into a dive. Spines sliced through the air. The skrill lurched down to avoid them.

Hiccup gritted his teeth, tightening his hold of the sword. Stormfly whizzed past the skrill and Hiccup leant owtwards. Alvin brought his hook up to meet the sword.

Metal hit metal.

Alvin twisted, the sword flying out of Hiccup's grasp.

Blue light lit the sky.

"Hiccup!" Astrid yelled as Stormfly fired again.

The skrill dodged the attack effortlessly.

"We can't outmanoeuvre it," Hiccup breathed.

"Then come up with a better idea!"

Hiccup nodded quickly. A sudden twist had him lurching to the side. He tightened his hold on Astrid to stay on.

Alvin laughed as the skrill charged up. The bolt released. The lightning fried Hiccup's hair.

"He's after me, we can... we can lure him down. Astrid, evasive manoeuvres by the cliffs."
