Chapter Twelve

Rick and Shane were out searching they're grid. They stopped for a second so Shane could put up a marker in hopes that it could help Sophia. He doesn't know why but things between him and Shane just seem different. He keeps getting a bad gut feeling with him. He knows things are stressful though so he's hopping that it all settles down. Shane is his best friend. He's been there for everything. The birth of both his children. He was a huge support for him with everything after addy was born. His struggles with Lori. He had his back.

He walked passed Shane and they looked at each other but both stayed silent. What was this feeling about? He started moving forward when Shane finished. He searched the ground trying to see any possible clues.

It continues like this for a while and rick hates the awkwardness with his best friend so he brings up an old memory " remember the name of the waitress at the Dairy Queen, when we were in high school." Shane stays quiet and rick smirks knowing this will work. "I know you Shane well enough to know there is only one sure fire way in engaging you in a conversation. And that is to start asking you about girls you did in high school. I don't want to but I'm willing to do it, if that's what it takes."

Rick looks back at Shane and noticed him trying to hold in the smirk. Shane finally answered "Maryann." Rick nods " You told me about her in excruciating detail." Shane laughs "excruciating my ass. You use to live for those details back in the day." Rick shakes his head laughing "yeah. I was impressionable." This made Shane laugh more.

Rick continues looking around as they talk "and I may have been living vicariously through you." Shane nodded smugly "why wouldn't you. My impressive list of accomplishments, I was an artist I his prime. A protégé." Rick turned to Shane "you mean prodigy."

Shane shrugs "maybe. Is a prodigy what you call a young high school stud, bangs 30 year olds on the regular?" Rick scoffed at this "what 30 year old were you banging in high school?" Shane smirks "the PE teacher"

This shocks rick, he had no idea. Part of that made him a little bit uncomfortable. He wouldn't be letting Shane give addy an dating advice, that's for sure. Rick turned to Shane over his shoulder when he realised he could only recal a male PE teacher "Mr Daniels?" Shane smirks "Mrs Kelly" the name clicks and rick shakes his head now remembering her.

They both started laughing "the girls volleyball coach? Wasn't she married?" Rick couldn't believe young Shane went for a married women. Shane laughed "oh, come on." Rick shakes his head "you know what I just remembered? Why I never asked you about this stuff."

Shane decided to turn this around on rick "why don't we talking about your high school love life then huh?" Rick shook his head feeling a bit defensive about Lori "yeah, well, that's a short conversation. It may even already be over."

Shane didn't face rick trying to dig for information "that right? There was holly, right?.....wait... nope, that was me too." They both laughed. "Then there was Sheila, that's the one you lied to me about." Rick cut him off "I never lied about Sheila. I just .... I just got mixed up about what the bases meant." Shane laughed again

"Well, just so you know, a home run, that usually means a sexual act." Shane laughed making noise smacking his gun. Rick laughed too about his mix up. Shane rubbed it in "like, that's intercourse." Rick shook his head smirking "yeah, I realise that now. Figured that one out eventually, got two beautiful children too."

Shane couldn't help but rub it in more at rick trying to deflect his embarrassment "I think what you did was more like a ground rule double or something." Rick replied as he moved ahead "I'm aware of the judge's ruling."

It was silent for a few seconds and rick feels a shift with Shane all of a sudden as Shane push's passed him saying "we shouldn't be talking about this stuff. That life... it's gone and everyone in it... Sheila, maryanne. Mrs Kelly. It's like we're old folk. All the people in our stories are all dead."
