Chapter Twenty

Rick was standing with dale talking as addy played with the dirt in front of them "she's really special you know. That smile of hers. She's gonna save us all." Rick nodded and smiled at the thought "yeah, that smile is magic. Before, when I would come home from work. Even on the worst days, when we had seen something horrible. I would come home to that little smile. So happy I was home. Even without being able to say much with words. She would babble away and smile at me and everything from the day would just melt away. Then the next day I would have the strength to get through anything all over again just to come home to my kids."

Dale smiled at him. He knew rick was a good man. And the best man to get there group through anything. He just didn't know how he would handle the Shane situation. Shane was the one thing he could see really taking them down.

They were both snapped out of there thoughts at being called out from the house. Rick quickly picked up addy and they made there way to the house. Shane met them there and they went inside. After being told what happened with Beth and that they didn't know where hershel had gone. Rick and Shane started searching for clues to where he might have gone.

Rick sat addy on the bed and she tried to help him search through the box he was looking at. Rick asked Maggie "your step mothers things?" Maggie nodded "he was so sure she's recover. They'd just pick up where they left off."

Shane picked up an old flask and showed it to rick "looks like he found an old friend." He passed it to rick to look at. Addy stood up on the bed holding onto ricks arm to keep balance and looked at the flask now in her daddy's hand.

Maggie informs them "that belonged to my grandfather, gave it to dad when he died." She took it from rick and looked at it thoughtfully. Rick watched her while holding addy in place "I didn't take hershel for a drinker."

Maggie confirmed "no, he gave it up on the day I was born. He didn't even allow liquor in the house." That made something click in ricks mind "what's the bar in town?" Maggie thought for a second "Harlan's. He practically lived there in his drinking days." Rick nodded "betting that's where I'll find him."

Glen stepped forward "yeah, I've seen this place. I'll take you." Rick nodded "alright, I'll get the truck.Glen goes to walk after rick but Maggie panics "no." Glen tries to reassure her "it's an easy run." Maggie stares him down "like the pharmacy?" Rick turned to look at her "hey Maggie. I'll bring him back"

Rick walks out and can hear glen and Maggie still talking when Lori calls out to him "rick? You want to have a conversation about this before you leave?". He sighs before turn around. Before he can even say anything to Lori Shane walls out with his usual asshole tone as of late "are you seriously gonna go after this guy with everything that's going on, huh?"

Lori puts her hands on her hips and stares at rick "he's right. He's right. This is not the time to head off, not today. You don't always have to..." Rick cuts her off, he's pissed at the top of them coming at him right now and addy is curling into him clearly scared so he's got no patience to let that continue "I'm not arguing. It's the least I can do for hershel after we.."

Shane cuts rick off "what? After we what?" Shane gets up close to rick making addy even more scared, she tightened her hold as much as she could around his neck. Shane just looks at them then walks passed and off down the hallway.

Lori watch's him go and knows he's getting to be a bit dangerous. She hasn't really been near him much as of late. She turns back to rick as he pats addy's back gently. "Carl said he would've shot Sophia himself." Ricks heart drops when she says this. He never wants for his son to have to do something like that. Lori keeps going slightly aggressively "that's your son. He's getting cold. He's growing up in a world with .... he's growing up in a world where he needs a father like you, around, alive. Not running off solving everybody else's problems. You have me the lecture about having two kids, well so do you rick."
