The sound of Sarah’s early morning crying woke me up as it did most mornings. School was starting in a day and I still hadn’t found arrangements for her. Gabriel was in his last year so he would be able to watch her next year and the year after, but this year I needed someone to watch her. I rolled over and found Gabriel’s spot empty and I heard Sarah’s crying stop. Paranoia and fear made me sit straight up. I looked around the room but Gabriel wasn’t there. I climbed out of my bed and ran to Sarah’s room. Fortunately I found Gabriel standing over Sarah, changing her. I breathed a sigh of relief and walked over to where he was standing.
“Hey” I breathed into his ear. He jumped, not knowing I was there but he laughed when he realized it was me.
“Hey sweet” He grinned, turning around to face me. He kissed me and then turned back to Sarah to finish changing her. “I didn’t mean to wake you” He told me, almost as if he was blaming himself.
“It wasn’t you, it was Sarah, but I don’t mind because she is my little baby girl” I said to her, my voice very childish like the voice you would use on a pet. She laughed at me and held up her arms for me to pick her up. I glanced at Gabriel to see if he was done. He nodded so I lifted her up and swung her around. She laughed and giggled as I held her in my arms.
“So, doing anything to prepare for the first day of school?” Gabriel asked me.
“Watching her, and trying to find someone who can watch her during the day, and I might just have to ask Doctor Watson” I told him and gave Sarah a smile, she smiled back up at me.
“Sounds like a fun day” Gabriel laughed.
“Yeah, tell me about it. What are you doing?” I asked him.
“I’ll probably spend the day with the boys like normal” He told me as we walked from Sarah’s room.
I walked to the fridge and pulled one of her bottles out of the fridge. I shook it and then fed her. Gabriel went to the stove to cook, since I was feeding Sarah. Although he wasn’t the best cook, it was better than cafeteria food. When Sarah was done I set her in her high chair.
“I think she is getting a bit old for formula. I’m thinking we should start giving her baby food” I told Gabriel after I kissed Sarah on the forehead. She smiled up at me again and I smiled back.
“I’ll get some today” Gabriel smiled he placed a plate onto the table.
“Thanks Gabe” I said kissing him.
“Welcome sweet” He responded.
I ate quietly while Gabriel sat next to Sarah and entertained her. Just as I was finishing Gabriel said my name.
“Grace!” Gabriel said. “Grace look at this!” He repeated excitedly. I looked over and they were staring straight at each other. “Sarah, say dada” Gabriel said to her.
Sarah looked at him with interest before managing a “baba!” and laughing after.
“That’s amazing! Sarah, try mama” I smiled.
She turned to look at me. “Mama” She said
“Good job sweetheart!” Gabriel said and kissed her forehead. “Try your name, can you say Sarah?” He said to her.
She looked back at Gabriel and thought about it in her head before saying “Sawah.”
“She is getting so old, man, I’m not even twenty and she is speaking her first words” I sighed. Sarah looked at me and tilted her head.
