Song: "To Be Treated Right" By Terry Reid

C h a p t e r N i n e t e e n >

Luke looks on with amusement as Robin watches everyone sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her. It looks like she’s being tortured and knowing Robin as much as he does, that doesn’t seem too far off. He doesn’t really know why she doesn’t like celebrating her birthdays but he does know how much she dislikes being the center of attention. Something that seems impossible to him since she is one half of the center of his universe.

Looking up at him with narrowed jet black eyes Robin hisses, “If you had anything to do with this I will kill you.”

“You can try.”

Running her tongue over her teeth she turns back to the group as they finish the song. Charlie is in her lap singing the loudest, of course but also the most off key. Luke can’t stop the chuckle he lets out when he hits a particularly sour note and everyone reels back with a wince. Well, Luke thinks with a small smile, apparently a career as a singer is out of the picture.

“Well blow out your candles, mama.” Charlie orders Robin.

Pulling her long dark hair out of the way and over her shoulder Luke’s eyes go to the vision of her mark instead of the cake. Since she’s dressed in a tank top and shorts every tantalizing inch of her skin has been on display for his eyes to feast on. He’s been keeping himself in check all day but he doesn’t know how long it’ll last. He is a man after all, not a machine.

With his eyes trained on the two crescent shaped marks on either side of her shoulder, his blood starts pumping harder. His hand shakes with the temptation to run the tips of his fingers over the mark. He wants to watch her melt under his touch and surrender herself to him. If it were his birthday wish he was sending out that’s exactly what it would be, to have Robin all to himself.

Cheers and clapping bring him out of his fixation and makes him realize how close to her he’s gotten. Backing up a few steps he catches Casey’s gaze and sees a hint of sympathy there as she claps along with the rest. Averting his gaze he lays his shaking hands on the back of Robin’s chair while trying to stay focused. He may be part animal but that doesn’t mean he can just lost control like that.

“Thanks guys.” Robin grumbles. “I really appreciate it.”

“Lies.” Faith sings with a grin. “Well all know you hate it.”

“I—“

“Last year she saw the cake and walked right out of the house.” Gabe adds in.

“Year before that she just spotted a deflated balloon and threw a fit.” Jessup chimes in.

Grace sighs and stops cutting the cake to point the knife at Robin, “If you even move an inch out that chair this year and this cake won’t be only thing I’m cutting, missy.”

“Are you threatening me?” Robin gasps.

“Are you thinking of bolting?”

Robin just shrugs.

“Then I may be threatening you. I won’t take that risk though, would you?”

Luke is chuckling silently into his hand. This family may be a lot of things but boring is not one of them. Noticing Robin’s pouting face he puts his hands on her shoulders and start massaging them.

Dipping his head he puts his lips to her ear and whispers, “Cheer up, would you? Its just for a few hours.”

Grunting she sits her chin into Charlie’s tiny shoulder. “Fine but I won’t like it.”
