Harry POV
We had another double defence against the dark arts class with the Slytherin's today, and we all filed into the classroom noisily, I had completely forgotten that Lockhart was gone, and Professor Moody was teaching us today.Once the class had settled down, Moody started his little lecture on the unforgivable curses. I could hear Ron who was sat next to Hermione, two people away from me whimpering because of the 3 spiders in the jars on Moody's desk.
I could also hear the annoying laughs and whispers from the front right-side corner of the room where Malfoy and Di Angelo's group of Slytherin's sat. Di Angelo had his legs thrown over the arm of the chair and his head was tilted back slightly as he laughed openly with the rest of them. If Moody saw them, which I'm sure he did with his magic eye, he chose to ignore it.
"who can tell me one of the unforgivable curses?" Moody asked the class. Of course, Hermione's hand shot up into the air, and I was surprised to see that Ron's hand had also gone up, rather half-heartedly, but I was nothing less than amazed when I saw whose shaky hand went up last. Neville Longbottom's. He looked surprised at his own daring, for he barely ever offered information unless it was in herbology.
"Mr Weasley?" Moody called.
"well," Ron began uncertainly, still staring uncomfortably at the spiders. "my dad did tell me about one, the Imperius curse."
"yes, yes your father would know about that one. Gave the ministry a lot of trouble back in the day. Yes, the Imperius curse, to have complete control over, anything or anyone." He turned to the Slytherin's. "it would help if you're paying attention for this bit." Di Angelo rolled his eyes, but nonetheless stared unbothered at the spiders.
Moody pointed his wand at the first spider, "Imperio" he made the spider dance on top of a glass of water, saying, "I could make it drown itself," he perched the spider on the edge of the open window, "make it throw itself out the window. Complete and utter control." He put the spider back in the jar and proceeded to the next one. "I believe your hand was up?" he pointed at Neville.
"the Cruciatus curse." Neville whispered.
"your names Longbottom is it?" Neville nodded, and Moody made no other inquiries. Di Angelo however, lifted his head and stared at Neville.
"Frank and Alice?" Nico asked
Neville looked at him and he nodded frightened. Di Angelo stopped there, at the look on Moody's face, and Moody mouthed 'later'. Nico rolled his eyes, and yawned, gesturing with his hand to continue.
"the cruciatus curse." Moody said, "to inflict pain. You don't need knives and thumbscrews if you can perform this. Although it's better to keep one just in case" He said nodding his head in Nico's direction slightly. "it needs to be a bit bigger for you to get the idea." He let the second spider out, and it crawled around trying to escape, "engorgio," Moody said, at the spider swelled to double its size.
Ron abandoning all pretence, pushed his chair as far back from Moody's desk as possible. Before the spider got too far, Moody yelled, "crucio" and the spider began to wither and, if it was given a voice, I was sure it would be screaming.
I looked around the classroom not wanting to see the spider in so much pain, and my eyes landed on Neville who was white as a sheet and looked like he was holding back tears, then to Hermione who was looking at Neville with sympathy, and most of the other students who were doing the same as me, trying to avoid the sight.
Then I saw Di Angelo. His hand drumming on the table, eyes staring at the twitching spider, his mouth forming a small smile, he looked unbothered. He looked like he was enjoying the scene.
