"Alex Philip has a surprise for you before supper" I smile placing my hand in his shoulder
"I'll be right there" he says scribbling things down still
"No you will come now, it's his birthday Alex. I know you've forgotten so the least you can do is actually be downstairs and make it seem like you haven't" I huff before leaving the room, him following shortly after.
"Hey Philip, are you ready?" I ask kneeling down to his height he nods his head nervously
"Daddy, daddy, look, My name is Philip, I am a poet, I wrote this poem jus to show it, And I just turned nine, You can write rhymes but you can't write mine" he slowly starts to get more confident
"I practice French and play piano with my mother,I have a sister, but I want a little brother!"
"Okay" Alex laughs looking at me, I turn away with a light pink tint to my cheeks
"My daddy's trying to start America's bank,Un deux trois quatre cinq!" He shouts 'cinq' as loud as he could
"Bravo" Alex smiles at his son as he runs over and hugs him before running off to the kitten ready to eat
"I'm planning on going to the Schuyler mansion with the sister for the summer, I think you should have a break from work, just for the summer. You've been working non stop. You need da break" I please with him
"I have a lot to get through" he says with sad eyes
"Just think about it, please. For me" I smile sadly before walking into the kitchen to serve the food

It's the day we leave with the sister to go away and Alex still hasn't given me an answer whether he's comping if not. I've packed him a bag in case he does want to come, but I've asked the sisters to come over and see if they can persuade him.
I hear them knock in the door so I call Alex down.
"Right Alex, I know you have a lot of work to do but we all think you should have a break from all of this stuff" Angelica says getting straight to the point
"The time away wouldn't feel the same with out you" Eliza adds
"John Adams spends the summer with his family" I state
"Angelica, tell my wife that John Addams doesn't have a real job anyway" Alex says getting a bit petty
I scoff slightly, he could have just said that to me.
"Come on it will be fun!" Angelica says trying her hardest but Alex has such a think head that whatever we try it just won't go in.
"I have so much work to do. You guys go and have fun" he says finally making up his mind. He begins to walk away and Angelica tries to stop him but Eliza and I tell her not to bother, even if he did come with us he would be too focused on his work.
We grab our bags and make sure all of the children are here before getting into the carriage and going upstate.
