the week flew by and before nini could even process anything, she found herself coming downstairs to open the door to the boy who broke her heart
she meets his eyes and he takes a deep breath.
"hey." he says
"hi."
she opens the door wider to let him in and when he enters, she leads him upstairs to her room to get started
ricky takes in her room and it's as though he's in a completely different place than what it looked like months ago.
the white walls were replaced with a light pink and grey-purple, mostly covered in polaroid photos and fairy lights.
the bed, that had bland white comforters were changed to a grey comforter with fluffy purple and dark-pink pillows
and the corners were now filled with furniture that had her belongings. farthest-right corner of her room contained a keyboard on its stand and a guitar and ukulele hanging on the wall above. under the hanging instruments had the words 'music corner' written in bold, black letters.
he smiles softly to himself when he remembers the last time he was here, asking her why she wouldn't decorate her room.
her answer was vivid in his mind.
'i guess because there's no point if i'm going to be leaving soon'
but now, she was here, months later with a fully decorated room that was permanently hers, in her forever home.
"uh-okay, so it's supposed to be a story right?" he asks
nini nods "yeah, so maybe the song could be about the perspectives?"
"yeah that's a good idea." he says as he writes it down
nini watches him write on the paper and she feels like asking the one question she'd been keeping to herself all summer
"uh-ricky?"
the boy lifts his head and their eyes lock
"yeah?"
"why-" nini takes a deep breath "why didn't you tell anyone? that you were leaving?"
ricky puts his pencil down and scratches the back of his head
"uh-i-i guess i didn't feel like having to explain about my parents." he says.
technically it wasn't a lie. he didn't want to tell everyone his whole life story, but the other reason was that he wanted to avoid all of the drama from everyone.
nini nods and returns back to writing.
they work in silence for the next fifteen minutes, stealing quick glances at each other every once in a while.
"uh- is it okay if i-?" ricky points to the guitar in the corner.
nini looks back and nods slowly.
he cautiously stands up and takes the guitar, sitting back down and strumming a few chords
nini watches him play and feels little flutters in her heart.
she sees the way he looks so concentrated in what he does as he plays effortlessly
the girl shakes her head softly
'he hurt you nini. he hurt you and you're with james.'

ricky ends up leaving not long after they came up with a melody for their song
nini hears the front door open and realizes that aria came back from robotics.
jacob was still out with maya. they've been together 24/7 over the summer and they're still not sick of each other
"hey neens." aria smiles as she walks into the living room
"hey." nini half-smiles
"how was the 'working with ricky day'?" she asks as she sits down
nini takes a deep breath "it was awkward. mostly silence and the times we talked would be about be about the work."
aria nods and they both hear their moms calling for dinner.
"let's go."

dinner was the usual at the salazar-roberts.
full of vibrant energy.
but when nini goes back up to her room, she has this feeling in her stomach and she can't stop thinking of ricky.
she heads over to her keyboard and plays random chords until words just flow out of her.

nini turned her phone off and put it away before continuing to randomly play the piano in silence.
