Lydia's POV
"Lydia!" Barbara called out from the attic. "Can you come here for a minute?"
Diesel spit out the cereal she was eating and started laughing hysterically. "Uh-oh! Lydia's in trouble!"
"No, I'm not. Barbara isn't the person who punishes me in this house." I said. "Dad is the person who does that. Now, clean up your cereal before Dad punishes you."
"Okay, then." Diesel smirked. I liked that Diesel had started to lighten up a bit. She used to be shy and sweet. Now she was still sweet, but much more outgoing. I watched as she grabbed a few paper towels and wiped off the milk on the table.
I walked up the stairs to the attic, where all 4 of my parents were waiting.
"Lydia, there you are." Adam said. I looked around at how stern my parents were.
"Is something...wrong?" I asked.
"No, um, we just wanted to have a conversation about Diesel's future in this house. We already told her she was going to be adopted by us sometime in the future, but before we go ahead with it, we wanted to make sure you were okay with having a little sister." Delia said.
"Oh! I'd love to have her as a sister. She's so sweet, and funny, and cool. Plus, the parentless people need to stick together." I laughed.
"Then it's settled." Barbara said. "Diesel!"
I heard someone run up the stairs and open the door. And there was Diesel, with a milk mustache. "Yeah?" she asked.
"First, you need to wipe your face." I laughed, and Diesel wiped her face on her elbow.
"Second, Diesel, do you have a social worker?"
Diesel laughed and nodded. "Yeah. I don't remember her name, and my 'parents' would kill me if they found out I was getting adopted. Call the principal at my old school and explain the situation, she might have her number in my file."
Dad took out his phone and took Diesel out to the hallway. When Diesel came back in, she crouched in front of the door, eavesdropping.
"Diesel, honey, you shouldn't eavesdrop." Barbara said.
"I know. But this is exciting!" she laughed.
"I'm with you!" I said, kneeling down with her. Diesel laughed and I elbowed her saying, "Ssh! We don't want Dad to hear!"
After a few minutes, Dad hung up the phone. Diesel and I moved back in case Dad didn't know we were there, we didn't want to get hit with the door.
"Diesel? Lydia? I know you two are back there." Dad said. "Now move back, both of you." We ran over to sit on the couch as Dad opened the door to the attic. "Everyone, I have great news." he said with a smile.
"What is it?" Barbara said, taking Diesel's hand.
"Well, I have 2 amazing things to share. 1, we are approved to adopt Diesel, her social worker is coming with the paperwork. Since Diesel is over 12, she gets to choose whether she gets adopted by us or not. So Diesel, what do you say?"
Diesel ran up to Dad and hugged him. "Yes!" she cried. "YES, YES, YES!"
"Wait, what's the second part of the news?" Adam asked.
"Well, um, Diesel, your foster parents got their foster license revoked. They can't take you in again even if they wanted to." Diesel jumped up and down and hugged everyone in the room. "I can't thank you guys enough." she said, happy as can be.
Adam reached out to ruffle Diesel's hair and realized it had changed. "Diesel! I like the new hair! Auburn really suits you." Diesel blushed a bit, and played with her hair. "Thanks." she said. "All the credit goes to Lydia and Delia."
We blushed as well, and Diesel took off her beanie and shook out her hair, showing it off. We all clapped and cheered.
"What's for dinner?" I asked.
Adam whooped and said, "We're going out for Chinese! Diesel, I'm right to assume you've never been in a buffet before?"
"Actually, I have." Diesel said, and Adam looked surprised. "Buffets are relatively cheap, so I was usually allowed to go to them."
"How do you like spicy food?" Delia asked.
"I'm usually used to eating bland stuff such as cereal, but I'd love to try it!" Diesel laughed.
"Well, on to Chinese! Delia, since me and Barbara can't leave the house, can you check for the nearest buffet that lets you bring food home?"
"Sure! Though it'll be hard to explain WHY we need to bring extra food home." Delia said, laughing.
"My first real dinner out!" Diesel said, running downstairs at lightning speed.
"I'm so glad we decided to keep her." Dad said.
AN: I wanted to do something a lot different in Lydia's perspective but I thought this was good enough so here you go! I kind of want Chinese right now so that's why the Chinese buffet thing is in here. Let me know how you like the story so far and what you think should happen next!
