I was so glad when class finally finished because it meant that I would be able to talk to Courtney again. Of course, I was aware of the fact that I probably should have been spending more of my time focusing on my academic work than thinking about Courtney but it couldn't really be helped. She had sort of become a key part of my daily thoughts now, for some reason.
"Hey cutie. How was class?" she asked me, as the two of us began to make our way down the hallway after one of the longest lessons I had ever had to endure. I knew that all classes were the same length. I supposed that class seemed to drag a little bit when you really just wanted to spend your time talking to your now girlfriend. That was still amazing to me! I finally had a girlfriend. I finally had someone to look out for and love and care for and I was so glad that I had Courtney. She really had seemed to have changed my life. Things were different now. I had spent so long liking Emmy that I wondered if I would ever find someone that I could like in return. Now, I realised that I could. I just needed to have a little faith in myself. I was a likable person. At least, I liked to think that I was and Courtney definitely seemed to think that I was, which was a bonus.
"Class was good! I mean, I wished that the two of us could have spoken more but-"
Courtney smirked and I smiled back at her, naturally. She had one of those smiles that was simply, entirely too infectious to not smile back at. I had gone months without being able to see Courtney smile genuinely. It was nice to see that she was now happier. I was aware that from time to time, she still had those issues with her father but I really wanted her to know that I would always be there for her. Always.
"You can't let me distract you from your work, Clarke," she told me, "You rely on me but that also does mean I have to be somewhat responsible about how often I distract you."
I felt a blush creep on my cheeks, I just hoped that the cool air that we had entered as we walked outside would make it disappear.
When I looked towards Courtney, I realised that it hadn't, in fact, disappeared.
"You're so adorable," she teased.
I gave a playful roll of my eyes in response to that comment.
Courtney seemed thoughtful for a moment, before she spoke again.
"Are you cold? I could lend you my jacket. It would probably be huge on you, Phoebs but...it's a possibility," she said. After she had said that, the corner of her lips twitched up a little.
"What?" I asked her.
"Nothing," she said, as she began to take her jacket off and put it around my shoulders. "I just thought that you would be adorable in my jacket and it turns out that I was correct."
I felt my eyes narrow slightly, but I still couldn't help smiling at her. She was the sweetest. She would deny that she was but I believed that being with me had made Courtney a little less tough. She had been like an armadillo at first, with this hard exterior but when you looked within, she was a total sweetheart. That was what made her so likable.
"There. It wouldn't be fair to let you walk in the cold all by yourself," she told me, as the most beautiful smile appeared upon her face. Of course, this was Courtney that I was talking about. It wasn't exactly a challenge for the girl to look beautiful. She always did. It made me wonder how I hadn't liked her sooner. Then again, I did have to remember that there was a point in time that the two of us hadn't got along. I had to wonder how that had ever happened. Now, I couldn't imagine my life without Courtney in it.
"It's not fair on you that you now don't have a jacket," I told her.
Courtney took my hand in hers and gave a subtle shake of her head.
"It's alright, Phoebs. I'll manage," she told me.
"If you say so," I said.
"I'll absorb what little heat from your clammy hand I can manage," she said.
I gave a mock gasp of offense.
"Hey!" I said.
"I'm kidding. It's still pretty damn adorable that you're still so nervous around me, though," she commented. "Now, me giving you my jacket wasn't the end of today's generosity. Do you want to go and get a hot chocolate?" she inquired.
I, of course, had to give a nod of my head at her question. What sort of question was that? Of course, I wanted a hot chocolate. I always wanted a hot chocolate. I particularly liked the raspberry hot chocolates that the school cafe did. Those ones were pink and probably the best ones I had ever had.
The two of us made our way towards the school cafe, so I could purchase a pink hot chocolate. It was definitely a good decision. Courtney didn't opt for a pink hot chocolate. She opted for a coffee. Black.
As we sat down, I simply stared at her in awe.
"What? I didn't judge your mug of unicorn hot chocolate. Stop judging my black coffee," she said.
"As black as your soul?" I asked.
Courtney narrowed her eyes at me, as a playful smirk appeared upon her lips.
"Ha-ha. Very funny, Clarke," she said, as she took a sip of what I imagined to be the most bitter drink around, but as she had said, I couldn't really judge.
I took a sip of my 'unicorn hot chocolate', as Courtney had referred to it, and was instantly sent to a warm paradise. Perfection.
