I didn't know how to move forward or pull my eyes from his. He cleared his throat and darted quickly to get a whiskey glass for himself. Hailey was still waving me over nonchalantly and she obviously didn't know how much power this man had over me for a good portion of my adult and late-teenage years.
I found my footing and walked to him and sat painfully in the bar stool as his eyes ran over my drained-of-color face. His hair was long, so long I wouldn't have recognized him if I hadn't spent so much of my new life still obsessing over him. He still couldn't grow a beard, he had one of those nasty unshaved mustaches that needed to be off his beautiful face.
"Hey," I was the first to say something as I reached for the drink I had before me.
"Hello," he replied and I could feel the tension between us and Hailey started laughing so I kicked her in the shin. His eyes shot between the two of us and I looked back at the door and bit my bottom lip wanting to make another run for it.
"Yeah, um, so I'm going to the ladies room. So you two have a good talk," Hailey ran to the bathroom and I wanted to run with her.
"She's a character," he laughed nervously and took a shot of his own glass of whiskey.
"Yeah she is," I looked down at my drink unamused at the small talk we were having. I was crazy to have thought we would pick up right where we left off, but it'd been over four years since we last saw each other. I'd had three boyfriends in the time span. I couldn't imagine how many he'd had and I didn't really want to know.
"How long have you known her?" He asked filling the time.
"Four years. We were roommates in college."
"NYU, yeah, how was that?" He tried to look interested but I knew he would rather be talking up Hailey instead. She was blonde and much more of his type.
"Hard and fun. I met a lot of cool people there. I don't know if you talk to Alaric or James anymore or if they told you, I got an internship with Elle magazine and that's why I'm here in London. I'm working at their office," I nodded my head and looked out into the crowd of people drinking and having a good time. I knew I was word vomiting, but I didn't really know how to talk to him anymore. And the proximity of our bodies this close was completely getting the best of me.
"So are you writing for them?" He came around the bar and sat where Hailey was sitting.
"No," I laughed and told him the truth. "I'm sorting through their junk mail and taking out their trash. It's exactly everything I ever hoped for," I laughed to myself and downed the rest of my drink.
"You're doing better than me. I've been pouring drinks the last four years and singing to drunk people who don't tip well if they tip at all," he laughed about it. His green eyes caught me staring at him and I blushed and smiled down at my empty glass.
"You know I still think about you," he told me quietly and I had to look at him again to believe I was really sitting here having a drink and decent conversation with the boy that got away.
"Well you probably shouldn't do that," I smirked back down at my drink. "Why haven't you been home to Maine?"
He frowned and I could tell he was mad that I shot him down after he tried to flirt with me. "Why should I? James is married to some woman. Vincent's running all the stores. Sabrina's in school in California. Daphne and Charles are working somewhere in California. There's nothing there for me." He shrugged his shoulders and I could tell Maine was a sore topic for him now. I didn't know what had happened between Harry and James but it obviously wasn't good.
"What about Alex? You still talk to her?" He changed the subject.
"Yeah I do," I smiled and looked him in the eye again before diverting my stare back to my empty glass. "She's a district manager of a Nordstrom's in New Jersey. She's got a baby on the way with her boyfriend. She's happy, she's in love, and she's successful."
