EDITED
"Hey. Is that pepperoni?" Haylie turned away from the fridge just in time to see Stiles open the box and help himself. Normally she would make some kind of remark about why he asked if he was going to eat it anyway.
"I thought you were staying at Scott's tonight?" She asked, placing two plates down on the table so Stiles wasn't using his hoodie sleeve as a plate for the pizza. Stiles shrugged and watched his sister take a seat at the table instead off grabbing a few slices and going to her room. "You've been hanging out a lot recently." She pushed, while trying not to seem like she pushed.
"Not any more than usual." He defended. Which was true, the boys were always together it was just now they were spending more time together outside of the house. "He was going to see his mom to ask for the car tomorrow night."
Haylie nodded, taking a bite into the hot pizza slice. They stayed silent for a minute. Stiles wanted to ask if Derek had been and gone. Haylie wanted to ask 100 other things. "So, how is Scott. He seems different right now."
Stiles choked on his pizza by the question, knowing his sister had no idea just how different his friend was. "Different how?"
She started to smile, more out of confusion than humour. The fact he even asked the question just added fuel to the fire. "I don't know, how about the fact that he suddenly made first line. Or he has a date with a girl for the first time in forever?" He knew his sister was suspicious, especially since she hadn't taken her eyes off him since they sat down.
"New year, new Scott." He joked and before she could press him anymore, he added a few slices to his plate and escaped to his room. How things change she thought.
"Did you see him?" Scott asked through the speaker of the phone. Stiles flopped down at his desk and took in the mess of research in front of him.
"No, he wasn't here. He must have just grabbed his jacket and left." He couldn't help feeling a little cautious now knowing Derek had been alone in his house with his sister. Although, considering he raced home when he realised the time, Derek couldn't have been here for more than 10 minutes, so it seemed more likely he was just trying to get to them through her and there was no real danger to Haylie.
Scott didn't reply at first, knowing his friend well enough, even without seeing his face, to know there was more on his mind. "Scott, this is my sister we're talking about."
"He didn't hurt her."
"He still could!" The frustration was starting to cause a rift between the two boys which was bound to happen when they disagreed for the first time in years. "I think we should just ask him. Maybe we can get him to leave her alone."
Haylie stayed silent at the door, standing with her wet hair and covered in just a t-shirt she found on her bedroom floor. When she heard the boys hang up, she debated on barging in and confronting her meddling brother. However, it was hard when in her gut she knew there were obviously things she didn't know so, maybe for once, she could trust her dorky brother was looking out for her.
When Haylie tucked herself in bed and turned off the light, all she could think about was Derek Hale. She thought about how he made her feel when he said he wanted to kiss her and how stupid she must have been to let him completely compel her the way he did. She barely knows him, and she just allowed him into her home and allowed him to seduce her. She thought about how Scott and Stiles seemed so convinced he was bad news but were refraining from telling her exactly why. How Derek showed up the second weird things started going on with the teen boys. She fell asleep with the last thought in her mind being the research she found in Stiles room. If only she had fallen asleep with the last thought being of Derek. Then maybe her dreams could have been filled with him rather than a nightmare filled with a beast.
The next day, Haylie did her best to forget the nightmare that woke her up at 4am and scared her to the point she didn't even want to try and fall back asleep. She was being chased in the woods in the middle of the night by a creature she couldn't see, only hear. It made her feel so uneasy that even when she was getting into her car in brood daylight, she felt like something was breathing down her neck.
Thankfully, today was the morning of Lydia's party which meant there was no way Haylie would have even a second to herself to think about anything other than outfits and music. The entire day would be filled with what they were going to wear, what time they would get there, and the list of who should be turned away if they're seen within ten feet of the drinks table.
The three girls made their way to Lydia's locker with only the outfit portion covered. "I have to head to my locker, so can we continue later?" Haylie asked politely but had already started waling in the opposite direction before Lydia could whine and refuse her departure. Just as she left the two girls, her clunky twin replaced them by her side.
"You sure left in a rush this morning."
The fact that Stiles was now purposefully reaching out to Haylie in the middle of the hallway was enough to make even other kids turn their heads. Haylie of course, noticed the looks but today she just rolled her eyes at the immaturity. "Yeah well, you and dad seemed pretty busy this morning." Haylie turned with a smirk as she teased him. "Didn't want to intrude."
Stiles scoffed but stopped at her locker with her. "Please. Intrude anytime." He smiled when he watched the small laugh escape her small mouth. It always felt like an achievement when he made his sister laugh. "Walk you to History?" He watched her think about it for a moment but then nod, appearing to have the same intentions. Ask as little as possible but find out the maximum in the most causal way. It seemed to be the only type of conversation they could manage these last few days. "So, are you looking forward to the party tonight?" He really hoped she wasn't about to reveal her new date was Derek Hale.
"Yeah it should be fun." Haylie nodded and pulled the bag higher on her shoulder, her eyes watching her small feet meet the tile with every slow step. "How is your history project going?" She asked thinking back to the paper bomb that went off in his room.
"What History project?" Stiles was now confused by where this conversation was going. "It's the first week of school why would I have any homework?"
Haylie nearly blurted out another question but for once she thought about her words before she spoke. "Oh, my bad." They both thought about what question they wanted to ask next. "So, what was dad yelling at you about this morning?"
"Stilinksi!" Both teens stopped immediately and turned to face the coach pushing kids out of the way to get to them.
"Saved by the coach." Haylie joked before making a quick getaway so she wouldn't somehow be caught up in whatever Stiles was in trouble for. "We'll talk later though?" She couldn't deny the sense of relief when he began to smile and nod in response.
As she walked down the hall, now alone, she wondered if whatever Stiles was going through might now bring them closer together again. The amount of attention they've been paying each other the last few days really made her realise how much she actually enjoyed his company. Just as she was thinking about reconnecting with Stiles, she stopped in her tracks when she turned the corner into a hallway with only two figures in.
Haylie watched as Dereks retreating figure opened the double doors into the outside world. His back covered in his leather jacket so there was no question about who it was, even though he didn't look back at Scott still with his back to the lockers. Only after the doors closed again did Scott turn to face the blue metal, his breathing appeared heavy even from the distance Haylie was standing. She stayed silent still, waiting with anticipation as she knew something was building in the boy. If Scott knew she was there, he never would have pulled his fist back and let it connect with the metal with the force it did.
He took a moment to try and calm himself down by the threat that Derek had made. Although, trying to breathe only did the opposite as he felt his body's temperature changing. He couldn't afford to wait in the middle of the hallway to see if he turned or not, so he left with his head down low to hide his bright eyes and sharp teeth. If he had looked up even for just a second, he would have seen Haylie make her way towards where he had just lashed out. He would have seen her fingers trace the damage that had now been done with an inhuman strength that she couldn't understand, but so desperately wanted to.
