EDITED
Haylie went to school like she planned. Her other option was that she lies in bed all day feeling sorry for herself or thinking about the fire burning over her body where Derek's lips had been. When she walked down the hallway, she dodged the people she would normally say hi to, feeling irritated all of a sudden when she overheard the most pointless conversations. She had been listening to Lydia's pointless drama for years, but it was feeling like a struggle now she knew there was real life shit going on around her. After her morning classes, she was close to giving up and just going home. However, when she was grabbed by Lydia and Allison for lunch, she decided maybe she could use the distraction.
Lydia had been obsessing over her boyfriend's new interest in Scott McCall so intensely that she hadn't even bothered to ask about Alison's interest in the boy. So, Haylie decided to be the good friend, as usual. "Speaking of Scott," She started, as they took their seats on the small round table outside. "Have you spoken to him after he ditched you at the party?" Allison nodded while opening up her home-made sandwich.
"Yeah, I mean I'm giving him a second chance." She confirmed, forcing Lydia to roll her eyes. "What? You don't think I should?"
Haylie Interrupted before Lydia could plant any doubt. "I think you should." The red head could have snapped her neck with how quickly she turned to her oldest friend. "I mean, I've known Scott a long time. He's a good guy just sometimes a little..."
"Weird." Lydia finished while shoving a tomato in her mouth. Alison's eyes fell down to the table, internally questioning her decision but knowing her feelings for the brown eyed boy. "If you want to give him a second chance go for it. Although, I would be more interested in the guy that drove you home." She sent a knowing look Haylie's direction, as a small punishment for stopping her from saying her part a moment ago. Haylie knew it was meant to taunt her but with the mention of Derek her mind couldn't focus on the petty jab. "He is way more interesting."
Alison turned to Haylie as well. "He seemed really nice."
"What did he say to you?" Haylie asked, doing her best to seem as uninterested as possible. Alison shrugged in response.
"Not much. Nothing really." Alison thought back to the awkward car ride but couldn't remember anything important to share. "I did ask where you were, but he just said you weren't feeling great."
Lydia pointed her fork accusingly. "So, you can call your new boyfriend to tell him you weren't coming but not your best friend?"
"He's not my boyfriend Lydia." She said so sharply that Alison wondered if she was supposed to be uncomfortable or this was just the girls' dynamic.
"Well obviously." Lydia chuckled, not phased by the short response. "He's way too old and creepy for our little Haylie."
"He isn't creepy..." Just as Alison opened her mouth to interrupt what looked like an argument breaking out, Haylie phone did that for her.
She excused herself when she saw her brothers face on the screen. "Hey. How did it go?" She asked at a safe distance from any nosey ears.
Stiles sighed and looked to the empty passenger seat of his jeep. "Derek's been arrested." The second the words echoed through the phone Haylie felt a weight off her shoulders. "But I think he might be right about Scott playing in the game tonight."
It was the first game of the season and somehow had completely slipped her mind for the first time in high school history. "What's wrong with Scott playing?" She turned round back to the table and saw the two girls engaging in a normal conversation so hopefully the Derek topic had been dropped.
