The next few days were nothing short of torture.
For one mom had forbidden me to tell anyone about the letter. And she had emphasized the 'no one should know' part so many times that it practically rang in my ears. She was worried, if someone got a hold of the information we had and reached the same conclusion as we did, it wouldn't be good for the Kings. Though once she had calmed down, I had asked if I could share the said information with Emily at least, she had agreed asking me to make sure she didn't tell anyone either.
Another reason being Mason Bridget. The blonde guy was not there for the first few days of school but had returned with a tan, so it was safe to assume that he was on a late vacation. And now I was avoiding him. Which was not an easy feat either. It seemed like he wanted to find me.
The other person I was avoiding was Nick. And believe me when I say it's not because he did something, in fact it was because of his lack of response. He still roamed the corridors as if he owned them, throwing a wink here and there, smirking all the way. He still attended all his classes as if he was doing others a favor by gracing them with his presence. Under normal circumstances, I would have rolled my eyes and told him to deflate his ego but now, after knowing what I know, I simply had no idea how to behave in front of him. Hell! I wasn't even sure if he knew as much as I did. I had no idea if he even knew that his dad had reopened his late mother's case. Or if he knew about the letter.
Then there was my brother who blew a gasket when he found out that Monica's case was reopened. Daniel was pissed not only because of the case but also because it was Tony who had called him -to check on him, apparently- and let it slip what we hadn't told him yet. And guess who got in the crossfire?
Mom and Dad on the other hand buried themselves in work. Their guilt of not noticing the problems around their loved ones not allowing them to rest. They worked rigorously the last few days, trying to find a clue, a trace, anything to move forward with. Sophia and Tony helped as much as they could. Sophia cleaned yet another part of the office, looking for details, in the hopes of finding another letter or something like that. Tony tried to find out what was the most precious thing to Monica that she would give up her life for. But they all kept hitting dead ends.
The only people who acted as I expected them to were Nate and Emily. Nate on one hand didn't know anything, so he carried around as usual, smirking, flirting and laughing. Cracking jokes here and there.
Emily on the other knew everything. Though Em was friends with Nick, she wasn't close to his family, not like I was. She had been pained by Monica's note too. But it was more because of how upset I was than anything else. And although she was reluctant at first, she helped me avoid a certain blue eyed devil. I was capable enough to avoid the blondie, but the raven mop of hair was a totally different case. It popped up everywhere I went.
To avoid him, I ate quickly and excused myself during lunch hours. The classes we shared, I sat as far away as possible in the ones where seats weren't fixed. And in the ones that did have fixed seats, I made sure I was engrossed in my own work or at least looked the part, as he was my partner in those. I bolted as soon as the bell rang in order to minimize the chances of us being the last ones around like the first day.
I was being successful in my mission to avoid the said devil and Em didn't like it one bit. Not only was I hiding from one but two god forsaken boys, one of whom didn't even do anything, at least nothing recently. The other one, well the other had messed up enough last year for me to avoid him till eternity.
"For the love of God, just talk to him. Ask him if he knows about this all." Emily groaned.
"You of all people should know that I can't do that." I shook my head at her. "Not only would that be insensitive but it would give away a lot of things if he doesn't know anything."
She sighed in defeat, "Do whatever you want to, but mark my words, you can't hide forever."
"I can try." I grinned cheekily at her and then took off in a sprint as my eyes caught the stormy blue ones.
This went on for a few days. Until one fateful day I was stuck in between.
As I got out of my computer science class with Nate, I turned to rush off. But before I could do so, a set of brown eyes caught mine as the owner took unsure yet fast steps towards me. So naturally, I turned tail and got ready to bolt in the opposite direction. But a pair of narrowed blue eyes were already trained on me.
Ever heard of the saying, trouble always brings company? Well that's exactly what was happening with me. Here I was trying to avoid them, and now I am stuck between both. I had to move, but which way?
With Mason I knew what he wanted. But I wasn't interested in it. I didn't want him to get the satisfaction of anything.
With Nick on the other hand, I had no idea. The guy was more confusing than quantum physics. But at least with him I could be sure that he wouldn't do what Bridget did. I don't know how or why I knew this, I just did.
So with that in mind, I turned my back on the blonde and started walking towards the raven.
