Dean picks at the plastic laminate of the diner menu. His eyes burn against the blinding fluorescent lights. Across from him Bobby nurses a cup of coffee, trying to keep his eyes open long enough for his food to be served. Dean's stomach lurches as he sips at the hot sludge the waitress had put down in front of him. The chocolate inside has turned into a powdery clump that sticks to the back of his throat. His hands are still struggling to keep steady after their almost car-crash only ten minutes ago and the greasy coffee-scented air isn't doing much to keep him settled.
Beside him, Castiel is staring down at the heavy white mug as if he's hoping it'll evaporate if he stares at it for long enough. Dean can't help but smile at the uncomfortable frown pulling at the angel's face as he knows Castiel was too polite to refuse the coffee offered to him. A bell dings from somewhere to his left and Dean glances around.
The waitress leans against the marble countertop a nail file set in her hand as she sharpens her red fingernails. The diner remains sluggish and glum despite its steady string of customers and vintage classic design. The three stools are being occupied by two men dressed in trucker hats and basic run-of-the-mill outfits both doing the most to portray the trucker stereotype by eating burgers loaded with various meats and sauces. On the last stool a stern-looking woman in a black business suit is frowning disapprovingly at the two men as she picks at a plate of greasy fries.
"How're you feeling?" Dean turns back around to face Bobby. "I'm fine, it was nothing. It just...reminded me of, you know." The clink of cutlery scraping against plates sounds from behind him and Bobby shuffles in his seat. "Yeah I get it, you don't have to explain." He nods at him as some sort of reassurance and Dean feels the anxiety in his chest simmer down. "I-" He swallows. "I thought I saw-"
"You don't need that kind of stuff in a diner! I don't come here to be transported into an arcade! I come here to be served some food and to eat." They each shift in their seat to see an over-weight man in the corner of the diner yelling at the waitress with red nails and aggressively shaking one of the slot machines. He sees Bobby shake his head at the man but it's not their place to intervene. The less attention they draw to themselves the better.
"What did you see Dean?" Castiel asks. Dean drags his attention back to the table and leans in closer so he won't be overheard. "I thought I saw something following us. I mean someone, I- I mean... it had a face cause I saw its eyes and it was human height. And it had legs and arms like normal, except its arms were kinda deformed and I don't know it- all I know is I saw it against the window just before we got hit." Bobby's eyebrows raise.
"You sure it wasn't some kind of...wolf?"
"No, no. It was human. It wasn't on all fours, it was running next to us at the same speed as the car and its eyes were glowing, it was watching me."
Bobby tenses more and more as Dean describes the creature. He glances at Castiel. "But it was just my mind right? It couldn't have been an angel that's not how they work." Castiel's jaw clenches as he looks towards Bobby, an unspoken conversation happening between them. Bobby glances around the diner, then outside into the parking lot. "That dent happened somehow and I'm not going to take any risks." The yellow street light does little to brighten the outside world but it's enough to show how cornered they are and the lack of oncoming traffic.
"And if it's not an angel I don't want to know what else it could be. We'll have to leave the food for now."
Dean nods, swallowing heavily and tries not to be obvious as he slides closer to Castiel until their knees touch. "What else do you think it could have been?" Bobby pulls out his wallet and places a twenty on the table. A flicker of light shines on Dean's face, he flinches at the blinding light and glances at the neon red 'LUNCH' sign. It flickers carelessly on and off, on and off diminishing only to brighten blindingly and BANG.
