Dean's entire body vibrates with the movement of the Impala. His hand reaches for the gear stick but Bobby stills his hand. He gestures for Dean to speed up and Dean tries not to close his eyes at the feeling of the Impala gliding effortlessly over the tarmac. He waits for the engine to sound a pitch too high before he changes the gear. The Impala has a mind of its own, he barely needs to put his foot down for her to move, completely responsive to every move he makes. The wind caresses his face with warm heat as they travel down the road. He breathes in deeply as the engine growls, threatening everything in its path.
"Turn in there."
Dean's hand sweeps over the wheel as he turns into the gas station car park. The wheels crunch and groan with the transition from tarmac to stone. Carefully he pulls into the first space he sees and turns off the engine. He turns to Bobby.
"Well?"
Bobby pats his shoulder. "Considering you've only had four lessons? You're doing good kid." Dean grins, fiddling with the keys in his hand. For the past two days, whenever Dean and Castiel hadn't been challenging his grace, Bobby has been teaching him to drive, hours at a time. Dean had requested they do it as they have nothing but time on their hands. He didn't mention that he is afraid he'll never get the chance to learn once this is all over.
Bobby glances into the side mirror and then behind them. "Right we'll go in and out. No messing around, get what we need and get out, okay?" Dean nods. He's thankful Bobby doesn't suggest he stay in the car, he still gets anxious being in the Impala alone.
"Let's go." Bobby opens the door and gets out. Dean follows. The sun scalds the ground beneath him. He forces his hat onto his head, protecting himself from both the heat and any unwanted attention his appearance might draw.
The gas station has seen its fair share of blistering heat. The building itself seems to droop as the sun beats down on it. Sand and mud are plastered to the outside walls and the single gas pump that sits outside is at least thirty years old, gas dripping lazily from the nozzle.
The automatic doors stutter and beep as they walk inside. The inside of the gas station isn't much better than the outside. Dean glances around quickly assessing the people and exit. He's not being ambushed again. Keeping his head down, Dean follows behind Bobby. Bobby dutifully picks up the items they need, ticking off each item mentally as they move around the small store. When they reach the next to last aisle Bobby turns to him.
"Go pay while I use the restroom. Wait for me, don't leave alone." Dean nods taking the items handed to him and walking over to where the clerk is standing.
"Hey." Dean glances up as he drops his items onto the counter. He swallows as his eyes meet brown eyes watching him through a fringe of loose black curls, pulled back into the low ponytail. Dean's eyes fall to the gentle smile on her red-stained lips and he stupidly opens and closes his mouth before forcing a response out.
"Oh...erm, hey." He can't help but watch entranced as she reaches for his items, the movement causing the sun to illuminate her dark skin. Dean glances down at her name tag, a frown pulling at his eyebrows as it reads 'Steve' in faded capital letters. Her laugh makes him look up.
"Forgot my name tag." He nods slowly admiring the way her eyes sparkle with the sound. Subconsciously he smiles back only then realising he had been staring.
"So what is your name?" Dean curses internally as he tries and fails to be casual. That's what happens when you spend all your time with an angel and a guy who barely speaks. The girl finishes scanning the item in her hand and places it in the bag.
"Cassie." Dean actually has to restrain himself from rolling his eyes. Very funny universe.
He shoves his hands into his pockets, fiddling with the flask of holy oil stuffed inside and responds with, "Dean." She smiles brighter this time and leans more casually against the counter. The first time he meets a pretty girl his age and he's on the run from supernatural creatures with a limited amount of time before someone tries to shoot at the target on his back. It's only then that Dean realises he hadn't kept his head down enough as Cassie's eyes are practically glistening as she looks at him. Her head dips subtly every time Dean tries to cover his face with his cap. It's both flattering and frightening.
