(AN:- Eight by IU is my favourite song. This has been put in the epilogue as a tribute to her not only in this fanfiction but the real life world as well.)
Gong Yoo packed all his stuff into his backpack and looked around his room for the final time. He was in deep thought sitting on his bed when Jackson opened his door. He stepped out and locked his room with the keycard. This time he got it right and any other time he would have rejoiced but his mind and heart was heavy on finally solving the mystery.
He pressed the button in the magnificent elevator to go to the first floor dining room where everyone had gathered. As the elevator descended, a mix of thoughts was running through his head.
"My dear, Colonel Kim Junmyeon. Finally, I can answer your letter at least with the thoughts in my head and the feeling in my heart that somewhere, you can hear me. I have now discovered the truth of the case, and it is profoundly disturbing. I have seen the fracture of the human soul. So many broken lives, so much pain and anger, giving way to the poison of deep grief, until one crime became many. I have always wanted to believe that man is rational and civilized. My very existence depends upon this hope, upon order and method and my brain. But now, perhaps, I am asked to listen, instead to my heart."
The 'ding' sound of the elevator informed him that he had arrived at the first floor. As he stepped into the dining room, he could see everyone sitting and felt a lump in his throat. He knew they were all good people and hoped he had taken the right decision.
Gong Yoo cleared his throat and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I have understood in this case that the scales of justice cannot always be evenly weighed. And I must learn, for once to live with the imbalance. There are no killers here. Only people who deserve a chance to heal. The police have accepted my first solution to the crime, the lone assassin who killed Kang Daniel and made his escape through the bedroom window. I will leave the hotel here to conclude formalities. So I hope you're happy now, finally happy now. You are all free to go. May you find your peace with this. "
"May we all," he said in barely a whisper.
And he looked at all of them who had the traces of relief yet sorrow on their faces. He looked at his old friend Jackson Wang, who for the first time in his life was unable to speak and yet his face expressed rarely seen emotions:- pain and gratitude.
He turned away and walked out of the dining room and reached the ground floor where he gave his keycard to the receptionist and checked out. Then he walked outside the hotel where it was raining heavily and the sky was dark matching his mood.
He could see the police and doctors carrying Kang Daniel's covered corpse into a van. The hotel was gradually opening for more visitors since the lockdown on the west wing had been eased. Someone approached him.
"Annyeonghaseyo, I am looking for a Mr Gong Yoo. He's needed on a very urgent matter."
"Ah. He is on holiday. The, uh, Kassner case again?" Gong Yoo said.
"No, Sir, far worse. I have to take him to Pungnaptoseong straight away. There's been a murder, sir, right on the bloody Han river."
When Gong Yoo looked at him in shock, the man's eyes widened as if in recognition. " Are you the detective?"
Gong Yoo sighed reluctantly, "Yes. I am the detective. Could you please straighten your tie?"
The officer straightened his tie and stared at him, bewildered.
"I will see you at the car." And the officer scurried away.
Gong Yoo turned around to look at the Seoul Andaz Gangnam one last time in his lifetime and then continued walking into an abyss of darkness.
