"Of course he knows," she shouted back at me. "Kaysen is very intuitive, I told you that, almost gifted you could say. I know he feels me in here. He just wants to make sure you aren't in here too... thats why he isn't saying anything." She retorted in a most vile tone.
Kaysen was a little shocked at what she was saying and took a step back, "what are you talking about Love?"
"Oh I said that out loud? I was just talking to myself," she giggled again, "I love you too." She had to scramble to explain that one but it sounded good, I had to admit.
Either way, Kaysen seem to buy it cause he just kissed me again, only it was her controlling the kiss back. I felt as though I was trapped in quick sand, immobile, sinking into oblivion, my life slipping away and no one wanted to throw me a rope. A rope, a rope, a shiny white rope flashed across my mind, it was wrapped around me. My eyes followed it, slowly, the length of it lead somewhere. Kaysen kissed me again, seemingly enjoying her reaction to his heart filling, warm pecks covering my face. With every kiss the rope in my mind tugged more tautly. It was like he was controlling it somehow, my eyes searched fervently along the life line looking for my savior. Then my new friend broke into my concentration, "bitch, don't you just love this? He is so into me! You are lucky to be along for the ride. You should be happy that you get to have a small part of him at least. He did reject you after all."
"If he rejected me then why is it my body he is kissing and why do I feel so connected to him?" I barked back at her needing to find answers.
"I told you before, he dumped you and then you had your accident and now he feels guilty and sad for you being so pathetic. Really though, he knows I am in here because he just knows things. He is so amazing and dreamy. He loves me, always will. He said so."
I had a hard time with her answer, it just didn't feel right to me. Every time he called me Angel and kissed me, my heart wrenched. Or maybe that was her heart wrenching with the thrill of him. I couldn't even trust my own body, what the hell was I going to do? She was smart, I needed to get to know her. Her ego was strong, she liked to talk about herself and she loved Kaysen.
She told me that she was a doctor and how she and Kaysen had been friends since high school and that they had dated. Her family moved away so she could go to medical school. That is when he met me, but when she moved back here he dumped me for her. Of course she had many more details that I tried to tune out. It was nauseating listening to her carry on about herself and Kaysen. It was like her personality was so huge it was blocking me out, soon she would push me out all together. Could she do that?
I asked her what her name was back then and she told me it didn't matter because now she was Avery.
My retort was, "so I should just call you bitch then?" She replied, "no you can call me Harlee."
Ok then, that name meant nothing to me.
The door pushed open and a little old lady waddled into the room. My heart jumped into my throat, my body tensed and everything went black. I didn't know who she was but obviously Harlee did, so I pried. "Is this a friend of yours Harlee?"
She hushed me, "shhhhh! Don't say a word, pretend we are asleep!"
"But Harlee, the lady seems nice, how bad could she be? Who is she?"
"That is my grandmother, I think she is looking for me in your body! She knows... everything!"
Kaysen jumped to his feet and greeted the lovely little native woman, taking her hand in his they exchanged no words. He just nodded and guided her to my bedside. "Avery, someone is here to see you," he made her stop faking sleep.
