DAMOCLES DOCK

It was an odd piece of scenery. The wooden planks of the dock bled into the cobbled streets of the town, where seagulls would peck at salty food scabs and clap their beaks at one another for no apparent reason. A strong smell of chowder wafted through the air and burned the nose hairs of the four orphans stood waiting with their suitcases, having just departed from the Fickle Ferry that had taken them across Lake Lachrymose and just dropped them off on this very dock with Mr. Poe.

It felt like cloudbursts of unhappiness were exploding in the grey skies above them, no sunshine to be seen.

"Here we are, children." Mr. Poe announced as they passed under a sign. He turned and gestured up to it whilst trying to pronounce the word. "Deemo...Damo...Dudy Damo...Dimoclay...Dimoclat...Demcaca...Dock."

Cara turned and squinted her eyes at the sign, but all she saw was a muddle of different letters overlapping each other, so she didn't bother to try and read and just shrugged, looking back at the banker and her friends.

"It's pronounced Damocles." Violet said. She was holding Sunny in her arms, who was dressed in an adorable pink coat with the cutest hat on her head. The girl who was holding her sported a blue coat with pink lining whilst Cara had on a mustard yellow swing coat sort of thing.

Klaus wore his usual attire. Shirt, sweater vest and blazer.

"After the probably apocryphal figure figure in Sicilian Mythology." Klaus added on to Violet's correction and Cara found her eyes drooping. She had only just woken up from a nap when they arrived and was whisked off of the ferry before she even knew what was happening. Klaus' facts weren't that interesting to her at the moment like they usually were.

"Well, I don't have time to learn things." Mr. Poe said and brought his wrist up to his face so he could check his watch. "The banking day had already begun. In any case, I'm sure you'll be off on some exciting adventure with your new guardian."

The children exchanged glances, the Baudelaire's were anticipating and Cara was doubtful. She had been let down a lot recently so it wouldn't be a surprise if this let her down too.

"Remember," Mr. Poe pulled his card out of his back pocket. "You can always rely on us at Mulctuary Money Management. Now, if you'll excuse me, I will leave you alone on this mostly deserted dock to await your taxi to your Aunt Josephine's house."

"She's not meeting us here?" Violet asked as Klaus looked around them at the dock, frowning slightly at the run down appearance.

"Strangely, she said she'd be unable to come to the dock and I didn't think it polite to ask why." He nodded. "Perhaps she's planning a surprise party for you children."

"Oh, I love parties." Cara smiled at the Baudelaires, who looked just as doubtful as she did before, so she let her smile disappear and faced Mr. Poe once again.
