"LAST CHANCE GENERAL STORE."
Their fire truck had run out of gas deep in the Hinterlands. An exasperated glare had settled over the orphans when the wheels slowed to a sudden halt, Sunny letting out a disappointed babble whilst she dropped her hands from the steering wheel and looked hopelessly over at her siblings. Like always, they were stuck in a large desolate wasteland but this time literally and not at all figuratively, there hadn't been a building since the village and Cara swore she had seen a lion or two roaming out in the vast, empty space.
But they had driven quickly away, mainly in silence. Mostly, apart from Klaus and Violet trying their best to decipher the torn pages from the Quagmire's books that had been shot when...the incident took place. Cara had only tuned in once and that was when the village was still noticeable on the horizon, shrinking in size as the Baudelaires read yet another poem but this was not Isadora's as it was in Duncan's handwriting: When we drive away in secret, you'll be a volunteer, so don't scream when we take you, the world is quiet here.
Cara thought it was incredibly morbid but didn't think on it a second more because her day had been filled with enough macabre things. But it didn't keep running around her head, despite her numbness she wanted to be able to analyse it, crack it, to prove that she could do something. But it was no use, by the time the fire truck had stopped she was still stuck on the first line. Then there was no time to think on it, as the orphans abandoned the truck in search of a gas station nearby.
After about 10 minutes of walking, they eventually stumbled upon their saving grace, Last Chance General Store which Klaus had helpfully read out.
"That's an ominous name." He said, tilting his head at the building that seemed to be leaning like a monument in Italy. Sunny was in his arms, clinging onto her brother whilst Violet stood by their side. Cara was lagging a little behind, arms crossed over her chest.
"It probably means it's the only building around for miles." Violet suggested, holding the two red petrol buckets in her hand as Cara came and stood next to the siblings, her eyebrows raising as she stared at the store before them.
"I guess a last chance is better than no chance." Klaus shrugged his shoulders. Cara fought the urge to roll her eyes a little at the Baudelaire's never-ending painful optimism that they always had; their attitude had started to rub off on her a little bit but that was before her brother dropped 50 feet from the sky right in front of her eyes. "Let's see what we can find."
The store was decrepit-looking and Cara didn't trust it's foundation in the slightest but they weren't actually entering the shop yet it seemed. Klaus placed Sunny down on the floor and the four orphans split up to find whatever they could around the outside, for example the petrol pumps which Violet migrated over to with her red buckets. Or the telephone that Klaus trudged to, picking up the receiver. The gambling machine that Sunny waddled to or the water fountain by the side of the store that Cara deemed incredibly useful.
