- THE CARNIVOROUS CARNIVAL PT1 -
"I thought you looked absolutely cracker."A/N: i think this is the longest chapter yet and it's an early release wow
"ALONE! DESPERATE. DEFEATED. These are words I thought I'd never use except when talking about other people."
"If he swerves this car one more time." Cara Pritchard said out of her gritted teeth, extremely close to banging her fist against the top of the trunk and yelling at the man driving the car they were hid in to shut up. But that would give away their position, and also her arm was sandwiched between herself and Klaus and there was no way it was moving until after they were out of the car. Maybe even longer.
Despite Cara's kind request that there was no way he could have heard, the car swerved once again and sent all of the children into each other once more. Their shoulders collided and Klaus' hand that rested over Cara's shoulder hit her in the face violently, followed by a faint apology as they shook back to their original places and the car jutted along the road as best as it could with Count Olaf's abuse. Sunny was safe clutched in Violet's arms, on top of the girl with no one to bang into, but the three eldest might as well be in a boxing ring.
They had been in the car for almost a day at that point, keeping quiet and talking in only whispers whilst staring out at the only airhole and up at the stars that littered the sky above them and slowly turned to daylight and then evening once more. At first it had been peaceful, then Olaf got in touch with his rage and began twisting and practically hydroplaning down every road which caused Cara's momentary happiness of being reunited with her backpack again to diminish as it provoked her own anger about the incredibly reckless driving.
Yet it still seemed to be better than the car rides with Mr. Poe.
"Darling! Don't you think you ought to slow down a bit?" Esmé yelled out loudly, the car turning again and sending Cara's elbow into Klaus' side to which caused him to double over as much as he could within the car, his head banging lightly against the trunk above. Whenever Cara was in front of Count Olaf again, he would be in for it.
"First the orphans escaped my clutches, now I find out a Baudelaire parent may still be alive. Which means only one fortune, and the orphan I need to keep is the annoying one." Olaf asked loudly, their whole conversation echoing over to where the orphans hid in the trunk. At his words, Cara turned her head a little to face Klaus before she shrugged in acceptance of his statement. It was fair. "Do you know what it feels like to have your life spin out of control as if driven by the cruel whims by some unpredictable madman?"
Again, the car swerved and this time Sunny rolled across the three eldest orphans squished together like sardines, until Cara caught her at the last second before she went slamming into the side of the trunk. Heaving, Cara lifted Sunny back up onto her chest and glared above her, trying her best not to let out a string of colourful curse words towards Olaf. Since they left the burning down hospital, she had had more time to calm down from her other emotions and settle back on anger. Mainly towards Olaf.
