Rhiannon Gray moved in a way that no one took notice of her. She wore boots, skin tight pants and a loose fitting shirt. She had a belt around her waist that held various types of weapons. From Seraph Blades to Polearms. All of which were and are forged by the Iron Sisters who are a communal organization of female Shadowhunters and are considered the female counterparts of the Silent Brothers. The Iron Sisters are albeit more secluded and they reside in the Adamant Citadel, where they live in almost total solitude and speak only, and occasionally, to female Shadowhunters.
She turned a corner down that lead between two old buildings that no one used anymore. She had agreed to meet James "Jem" Carstairs at approximately nine o'clock for some type of secret mission that he could not tell Will Herondale, his Parabatai, about. Parabatai's are a funny business if you had asked her. A parabatai is a pair of Nephilim warriors who fight together as lifelong partners, their souls bound together by oath and their angelic bond. Shadowhunters are not required to have parabatai, and few choose to have one. Their emotions, instincts, and strengths are shared with one another. The parabatai runes allow the pair to maintain a strong connection and are able to sense each other's life force. The rune can also be used to track one another, and doing so will inflict severe pain on both. When one dies, the rune will fade.
"Rhi?" a voice whispered that almost made her jump out of her skin, but she soon settled down realizing that it was only Jem.
"Jem, why all the secrecy?" Rhiannon asked, a playful tone in her voice.
"Did it ever cross your mind that maybe I just wanted to spend some time alone with you without Tessa around?" Jem stated, a blush coming to his cheeks. It was known within the Institute that Jem was sweet on Tessa and so was Will, but that did not stop Jem from including Rhiannon in anything. Tessa and Rhiannon might look alike but they were far from the same. Where Tessa was soft and girly, Rhiannon was thick skinned and boyish. Where Tessa had a soft spot for Will, Rhiannon would not take his crap and he knew it. Rhiannon was not immune to Will's charms she would give him that but Rhiannon knew that beneath the wall Will put up laid a hurt and scared man. And she vowed to help him see that he could be a wonderful person if he just got past whatever it was that he could not get over.
"Actually it did not cross my mind, Mr. Carstairs. Because we both know that you rather fancy my sister and I am just in the way." Rhiannon retorted, making the blush drain from his pale face. "Though I would not mind it if it were true that you actually wanted to spend the time with me."
"Ah, ever the hard shell that is Rhiannon Gray." Jem teased, "Now come on, we must get this bloody business done with."
They moved in and out of alleyways for what seemed like hours before they ended up in front of what Rhiannon knew to be a opium den. Why Jem would come here himself with her was beyond Rhiannon. Usually Will came to these places for him.
"Jem, doesn't Will usually deal with this?" Rhiannon questioned for confirmation.
"Yes normally, but" Jem replied, looking back at her and then back to the building they stood in front of. He did not even continue but rather took two steps at a time and went inside, leaving Rhiannon a little stunned and forced to follow. When she entered she found that all, or most of, eyes were on her. A girl in an opium den was atrocious. And very unladylike, but Rhiannon was far from what was deemed ladylike and proper. She most preferred trousers to hoop skirts.
Rhiannon searched for Jem as the heat in her cheeks rose. She spotted him squatted down talking to someone who laid on a bed. As she got closer she realized that the person Jem was talking to was Will. A very out of it Will. Rhiannon felt a twinge within her at the sight of him laying there. Jem was trying not to loose his cool but Rhiannon never quite got the hang of keeping it. However, instead of blowing her top she chose to go outside and into the cool night air. Taking a deep breath and letting it out in one motion, Rhiannon knew what this must being doing to Jem, seeing Will like this and she hurt for him.
"Rhi do you mind taking the other side?" Jem's voice rang out and made Rhiannon shake her thoughts from her head. She bounced up the steps and put Will's unoccupied arm over her shoulder and together she and Jem took Will back to the Institute.
"Where on earth have the two of you been?" Charlotte questioned once they stepped through the doors, before she took notice of Will. "Get him to his room and let him sleep it off."
"Aye Aye boss lady." Rhiannon smiled, earning a grin from Charlotte. Rhiannon thought getting Will back to the institute was a job, but getting him up stairs was an even bigger one. But they managed and finally got Will into his own bed, muttering about things Rhiannon did not care to repeat.
Once in the hallway Jem turned to her with a look on his face that urged her not to talk about what was said between him and Will. "Thank you for coming with me."
"I am glad to help. Whenever you need it." she smiled and lightly touched his arm before she went to her own room that was down the hall a little from Will's own room.
"Rhi?" Jem said again before she could fully shut the bedroom door behind her.
"Yes, James?" Rhiannon furrowed her brow.
"I do truly like spending time with you. Even if it doesn't seem like it." he admitted before turning on his heel and walking away. Rhiannon felt the heat rise to her cheeks and her stomach fill with butterflies.
