VIRGIL's POV
"We run; we have to run." I say, grabbing his hand. I turn around to face one of the gates. I see around seven guards and the only thing that runs through my mind is 'I have to save Roman.' I do not know how this is going to go down, I don't even know if we can get out of here. I just run, pulling Roman along behind me. I run as fast as I can, maybe I can jump over the wall if I run fast enough. Yeah, like that's possible. Wait-
"I bet you can't jump over this!" One of the boys in my class challenges. We are having a jumping competition and for some weird reason I wasn't out yet. The boy, Jayden, walks over to me. "I don't know how you got over that last one so you must be cheating." He glares at me, I fall over as he pushes me. "What are you doing, Virgil!?" he yells.
"No-nothing."
"Then jump over that!" he points at a concrete wall. It's about two metres tall. I'm only about one metre tall. This could be difficult. I have never jumped twice my height before. Most of the boys here can't even jump 1 metre. I grunt, I will try anyway. I walk backward a little way and then run. I jump and suddenly I'm on the other side. I blink, what the hell.I keep running, "Virgil, what are you doing!? You're gonna get us killed!" Roman screams. I jump. Everything slows down, I can hear people in the stands gasping and yelling, I can see Roman behind me, screaming, I can feel his hand in mine and the wind. We just graze the top of the wall and fall onto the other side. The time goes back to normal and I grab Roman's hand again and run.
PATTON's POV
Remus and Janus are gone now, leaving Logan and I alone. Alone, you're alone with him Patton. Tell him how you feel. I dare you. The little voice at the back of my head poked at me. How I feel? What is that supposed to mean? I ask back at it. You know exactly what I mean. It says. I almost groan in frustration. What is that voice saying? What do I feel about Logan? I don't know, he's a great friend. He's welcoming and kind and handsome... No... yes? Am I meant to find my friends attractive? I don't know, I've never really had any friends.
"Patton, you look flustered, are you alright?" Logan says, startling me a bit.
"Y-yes I'm fine. Just having an argument in my head."
"Oh." He made an 'o' shape with his mouth and then went back to reading. I glance over, scanning the words on the page. He couldn't catch any of them as Logan turned the page.
"Whatcha reading, Logie?" I ask, trying not to cringe at the nickname I gave him. It just rolled off my tongue.
"Hm? Oh, I don't know. I picked it up a while ago, it's someone's diary. It's really quite interesting. And I know it's invading privacy and all, but no one came back for it. It was left in the woods for days and it's written like the writer wanted someone to find it." He rambled on.
"Oh, that's cool. Can you read it too me?" I asked, it really did sound interesting and... I liked Logan's voice; it was soothing.
"Uh, sure Patton. I should then start at the beginning."
"Oh, wait I'm sorry, you're probably at a good part and you don't have to read from the start, I don't mind, you keep reading I'll-" Logan lifts a hand to cut me off, chuckling a little.
"It's okay Patton, I don't mind reading it again." he pauses and looks at me, "come sit next to me, you look cold." My eyes widen but then I rush over, smiling. "Okay, this is called 'The Dairy of Rachel Crofters.'" He starts but then the door crashes open, causing both of us to scream.
"Who's there!" I yell.--
"It's just us, Virgil and Roman!" I hear Virgil call out. Logan and I are behind the stove. We slowly step out, laughing a bit in relief and because we were so stupid. I notice that my hand is grasped onto Logan's. He seems to notice at the same time, and we pull away, embarrassed. I rub the back of my neck but then remember that Virgil and Roman are back! I run up and hug Roman.
"Big brother!" I giggle into his shirt. He squeezes me tightly.
"Patton, thank god you're alive and fine and everything," a tear falls down his cheek, "I love you." I start to choke up.
"I love you too, Ro." After a while we hear Virgil cough.
"That was cute, but we have to pack. We gotta get out of here, to the third kingdom."
"Oh yeah, right." I brush myself off and drag Roman to 'my room'. "So, that is Virgil. He's cute." Roman whacks me playfully.
"Shut your mouth, little brother. It's not like he'll ever want me again." he looks saddened.
"What? Why not?"
"He said we'd never have a happily ever after anyway so there's no point."
"That's stupid! He said he missed you last night!" I sit in the middle of the bed trying to figure out a way to get them back together. I'll ask Logan to help me later.
"Yeah well. Do you have anything to pack?"
"Oh, uh not really, I dragged you in here to talk to you." He smiles at me.
"What about? Oh right, Virgil." I giggle at his face; he'd pulled it back into a funny disgusted expression.
"You should just ask him out again." I suggest.
"No!" he groans, stretching out the 'o'. "I can't do that, what if I get rejected!?"
"By who?" We look up to see Virgil at the doorway.
"No one!" Roman practically shouts. Virgil chuckles.
"We have to go tomorrow morning so you guys might want to come have dinner. We're gonna have an early night so we can get up."
--I slowly walk to my room, Logan is beside me, we're casually chatting away about things. When we reach my door, I can't bring myself to say goodnight. We stare into each other's eyes for a while and I notice myself moving closer to him. Do it, Patton, kiss him. the voice in the back of my head prods again. "No," I whisper to myself, hoping Logan doesn't hear. He did.
"No?"
"Uh! No? I don't know." I laugh awkwardly. He raises and eyebrow.
"Well, we should probably get some sleep. Goodnight Patton." And he walks off. I frown, what was that?--
VIRGIL's POV"Get up, Jan!" I yell at the man's face. It may seem mean to you, but this is how our relationship works. He whacks my head, "We have to go." I say, pulling off his sleeping bag.
"Mpff."
"Come on, please get up. I don't really feel like dying today."
"Fine, lets go." He chucked his sleeping bag into a bag and grabbed me, pulling me out into the main room. Everyone is up apart from Roman. I walk over to the couch and lightly shake him.
"Ro, we have to go." He stirs and blinks at me, his face slowly stretching into a smile.
"Virgil, good morning baby."
"Roman, please wake up." I shake him again; he'll kiss me like he used to when he woke up if I don't get him up. He leans up to me. I pull away, fighting back tears. "Roman, wake up!" I whisper-yell. He blinks again.
"Huh? Oh, good morning. Are we going?" he says, running a hand through his hair.
"Yeah, lets go." I breath out a sigh of relief and we grab our stuff, ready to get into Janus's van."You alright, Virgil?" Remus comes up next to me.
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Just cold." He gives me a concerned look but doesn't question it.
"I'm here for ya, if you wanna talk, Virge, you know that."
"Yeah, I know."
"Okay, good." He gives me a quick side hug before jumping in the passenger seat next to Janus. Logan, Patton, Roman and I slide into the back of the van, sitting on the cold, hard floor. This isn't going to be the most fun ride ever.
