"Baby, what were you laughing at while in the studio?" I asked Betty as we were getting out of the sport's ground. She smiled at me and was nearly bursting into another laughter. She covered her mouth with the palm of her left-hand, trying to lean on me.
"You know, Hun, some things you don't need to ask about. Why do you think the guy refused to take us another shot yet we were paying him?"
"I certainly don't know! I also didn't want to argue with him because it was getting late."
"You killed your fellow man's feelings... surely. He was trying to hide them using the papers, but the point reached when the papers themselves even said 'we are tired', haha."
"Look! Baby!" I said, "hope your luggage are safe. It's almost 1. We need to hurry!"
We crossed to the other side of the road and passed by the place I had kept my luggage before we could proceed to the bus stop where Betty was to board the vehicle. "Madam, you can't keep me here guiding for you your luggage for two hours!" I heard one of the conductors shouting at Betty. "Just go slow and ask him how much he needs. I guess he needs payment." I whispered to her.
"Am sorry!" Betty said.
"Now pay for the service!"
"Okay. How much do you need?"
"2 so." (Two hundred shillings)
I wanted to stay away from Betty and assume I was not with her. I knew the man would have demanded more money if he could realize Betty had her boyfriend around. She had to bargain with him. "But I thought that was your boyfriend, why are you 'crying a lot'?" He asked Betty.
"No, that's my elder brother. I forgot to carry my ID card and I went back to pick it. So when I reached home, I was told he had left to bring it for me here." Betty responded. I was pretending to be too much on my phone, but I had delegated my ears the duty of moving around.
"Now Madam," the conductor began, "the next vehicle is not yet ready. Why can't we have some moments here?"
"But am already late for school. I have a class at 3pm please." Taking out one hundred shillings note from her purse, she said, "take this and thanks very much."
After she had given out the money, she came to where I was standing. The conductor was also looking at her as she was going away. She had to give him her back to make him admire her more. In a disbelief, he turned towards the other side and began to shout, "Bondo! Bondo! Bondooo! Usenge direct!"
We parted ways with Betty when the vehicle was almost leaving. At this point, I started to shy away from discussing about Sweeney with her. Again, if I could send Betty to Sweeney, I thought, she could ask about when we did meet with her again apart from the day she brought for me the parcel. I had to take both of my upper and lower lips for a voluntary leave. They liked jumping especially when I had to talk about love. "Safe journey to you too my love, take care! Know that Betty loves you so much!" She said.
I went back to pick my luggage and move to the bus stop where I was to board the vehicle back to Maseno University. The journey seemed to be so tiresome. Since morning, that was the only time I had to chat to Sweeney freely. She had texted me when I was at the Sport's ground with Betty. She later refused to allow us continue with our chatting, saying she wanted my full attention.
"Hi sweetheart, have missed you so much." I texted after awhile.
"Where have you been? I texted you twice and you ignored!" She replied.
It's true I cut our chatting prematurely due to Betty's demands. But I had realized that I didn't have to tell her the truth. It's a mistake that I once done when I told her about Cate. As a way of setting her free, she got angry and went silent on me. I didn't want to repeat the same mistake by telling her I was with Betty.
