I reached school at 2pm. I was very tired but at least, when I thought of Sweeney and the surprise she gave me, I had a lot of reasons to smile. I opened the door, placed my laptop bag on the bed that was covered neatly with a white sheet. I changed the clothes I had and put on my brown sweatpants, a white vest and uncle socks.

On the desktop, I placed a cool music of a love song by John Junior – Sweetheart. I jumped on my bed, ready to relax and open the box. I removed it from the bag, placed it on my pink pillow and with her photo displaying on my phone’s screen, I started to open my surprise.

A surprise? Yes. I guess it was! Inside the box, I found a blue fossil hand watch with brown straps, a love coupon book and a blue bowtie. Inside the coupon book, the first page had the first date we met, the first time we kissed and our names boldly written on it. The second page had a short love poem, entitled “From The Far End Of The Tunnel, Comes My Love”. I was very impressed! I failed to get the best way to appreciate her. I sent her a text.

“Hey sweetheart. Have reached well. Have received your gifts. A lot of thanks to you for your love. Wish I could hold you now.”

My message got delivered immediately, but I had to wait for the reply for about an hour. To me, I thought that couldn’t be the case. She ought to have responded to me immediately, if really she loved me and would like to hear from me. I felt uneasy. I decided to call. Unfortunately, my two calls went unanswered. “Does it mean this lady was just playing me?” I wondered. I thought of sending her another message – that could not be friendly anyway – and that thought never won. I decided to give her some times. “Maybe, she’s not with the phone or maybe, her dad is around.” I folded my thoughts. I took the gifts back inside the box and felt asleep. I guess I was just stressed.

My deep slumber was cut short with the ringing of my phone. It was Sweeney. She had sent three messages.

“Hello love, why are you not replying to my messages?” She asked.

“Am sorry sweetheart, I felt asleep. Was feeling tired. And…” She cut me short.

“Oh, sorry. I understand. Then check the messages and reply please.” She hanged up the call.

On the screen, were her two messages and one from MPESA. She had sent me Ksh 2,500. In her second message, she wrote, “While going through your phone yesterday, your landlord was in need of rent. Am sorry for you. Please take Ksh 2,200 and pay the rent. The rest you can use for your supper. I love you”.

Fine, I never knew the best thing to do for Sweeney at this time! That was just too much – for a two-day lovers. To me, that was a very unique scenario. Have never dated a lady who could offer herself that much. Even my latest ex-girlfriend never sent me any gift when I was celebrating my 21st birthday the previous year, December.

I had promised the landlord to send him his money by 2pm, but it was already 4pm. I quickly sent him the rent. I remained peacefully, ready to concentrate on my love, Sweeney. But wait, I had my CATs on as the main exam would begin in two weeks time. I needed to work on my academics as well.

“Uko kwa nyumba?” Cate texted. Cate was a first year student, pursuing Accounting. A very beautiful Luhya girl. I had met her on her way to Mess – where students have their meals – and she gave me her contact. I had saved her as Darling though I had to delete that and renamed her ‘K-gas supplier’ because I didn’t want Sweeney to sense anything. I did not want to be with another girl besides Sweeney, as Cate could fix in very well. However, I thought Sweeney had some affairs with Martine. This thought made me to stay close to Cate. “Yes, Niko kwangu.” I replied. It was approaching 7pm.

Cate came over to my place. “I have missed you my dear.” She started. She sat next to me on my bed. Shortly, I realized I had not kept the box and it was still on my pillow. So I pretended to be sending her a cup of water – just to allow me keep it. The coupon book that was inside the box had very sensitive information, and if she could see it, she could have walked away immediately. “Kindly help me with a cup of water.” I said. I took the box inside my laptop bag and placed it in the wardrobe. It was late, so we decided to prepare ourselves a supper that night. I had bought some fish, ngenge – very delicious. She was the chef.

However, I was very uncomfortable. “What if Sweeney calls or texts now? How will I respond?” Difficult moment was yet approaching. I wanted Cate to leave as soon as she finishes eating, but from her behaviours – which were communicating otherwise – could tell me it was another night for her to spend in my house.

Food was brought to the table. I had less appetite because internally, I was wondering how I would manage to handle both Cate and Sweeney, should Cate insist on spending the night in my house and Sweeney also decides to have a chat with me overnight. I have been with Cate for the last two months and she knew I was not much glued on phone, especially when I was with her. This could make her sense something was cooking somewhere. Again, we’re just two days old in my new relationship with Sweeney. We had to keep communicating almost every time, especially at night. I had no proper excuse to give her if I didn’t have a talk with her that night.
