The wolf is quiet and moves closer to me. He whines and opens his mouth. I was sure that he was going to bite my head off, but the animal licks my neck. It tickled and I start to smile but stop when I realize that a wolf was right in front of me. The wolf lies down and rests its head on my thigh. I stare at the creature with wide eyes. Was this really happening?
“This isn’t happening.” I whisper. The wolf whines again and licks my paw. This was indeed real. I had to get home—my family is probably worried sick. I get up and I felt like absolute crap. My neck was sore as well as the rest of my body. Let’s not mention all the blood on my clothes. I sigh. I started walking back slowly. I look back and see the wolf was following me.
“Are you going to follow me?” I say and the wolf trots up next to me while slightly leaning into my side. The wolf was definitely bigger than normal ones and that must mean that it had to be a werewolf. Beneath all the fur lied a man. I walked in silence and every now and then the wolf would lick my hand or something like that. I had never experienced this before and I was itching to ask the thing to turn into a human. This was all so strange and I wasn’t sure how to tackle this little werewolf problem. I definitely had a protector though. About fifteen minutes later, I arrived at the stream. I turn to the wolf.
“You probably shouldn’t follow me anymore. You might get killed.” I say honestly. My father or any of the village people would kill the wolf if they spotted one. The closest monster we ever had in our village was a deranged grizzly bear. My father took him down with one bow through the eye. I bent down a little and the wolf liked the side of my face. How could such a beast be so gentle? Then he ran off back into the forest. I was almost tempted to follow the creature, but I was tired and hurting and I knew my mother was going to flip out. I hoped that Delilah was okay. The stream was not busy, but there was a guard there and when he saw me, he raced over and escorted me back to my home.
I assured him that I was fine and the blood wasn’t even mine, but he insisted that he talked to my parents. I sat in the living room with Jezebel patting my shoulder. Cole was watching me with a curious look. When my mother came back she looked angry with me and so did my father.
“You deliberately defied a guard and you go to your grandmother’s without even saying a word. We have been worried sick! There are wolves out there Calla.” My mother says yelling at me. I take it and just sit there and try to tune her out. Right now, all I could think about was the werewolf. I wanted meet his human side or whatever it was they called it.
“And all this blood!” She says. My father puts an arm around her to console her.
“It isn’t mine. I am fine mother. I killed the beast.” With a little help of course, I think. She shakes her head and my father points at his neck.
“What is this on your neck?” He says. I bring my hand up to my neck and feel the blood and the scratch wounds. Right.
“I’m fine father. Just a little scratch from when Delilah threw me off.” I say looking down at the ground. He sighs and rubs his temples.
“No leaving the village Calla! This is exactly why. You may have gotten lucky this time, but it won’t be the same if you run into a wolf again!” I shake my head. My father was right, but he didn’t know that I had a werewolf admirer. I had a protector and I wanted to go back in the woods to see the creature again.
“You might as well lock me up then! I will do what I please!” I counter. This stupid wolf issue wasn’t going to make me stop living my regular life.
