"I do believe in fairies — I do, I do."

"Fuck off, Embry."

In the small reservation of La Push, everyone knows everyone, where Darcie has grown up with the neighbourhood boys. Nothing ever happens that sparks gossip (unless you count who dated who; even then that was boring), but that comes to change with the disappearance of one teenage boy. Sam Uley causes a storm for the two Combs sisters that neither saw coming.

Rochelle, who is Darcie's older sister, finds her life changing through her attempt to rekindle her friend's relationship that backfires in her face. Rochelle never expects to fall in love with her best friend's ex. Of course, she hadn't planned it, but in the end, her only regret was hurting Leah. For Darcie, the betrayal of her sister stings as Rochelle wasn't the type of person to do that to a stranger, let alone a close friend. The only explanation Darcie can come up with is something illegal, where drugs and steroids have somehow manipulated her sister into acting so foolishly.

See things are changing for Darcie too since Sam's disappearance. He now looks at Darcie as if she has two heads; a monster from his nightmares, where the six-foot boy is terrified of her. Crazy, right? Never did she imagine her sister falling for his manipulations as whatever problem Sam has with Darcie, Rochelle now has with her too, but Darcie is completely clueless to what she has done so wrong.

Just like her sister, the boys around her start falling under Sam's mystical steroids spell. One by one, they follow the same patterns of disappearing from school and then suddenly popping up with cropped hair and a fresh tattoo on their upper arm. It becomes too much for Darcie once Embry is captured, soon followed by Jacob, which leaves it just Darcie and Quil against the world.

Secrets now lurk within the Reservation, and she isn't talking about her hidden feelings for Embry. No, it turns out there's a sinister secret, where knowing about it changes Darcie's life. After all this time, Darcie is the monster from the tribes taboo stories. See, she has pointed ears that only the supernatural can see, and she isn't shunned from the tribe simply because of her connection to Embry. Yikes, right?
