Getting out of the building for the group was surprisingly easy. Evangeline thought they were going to get caught at some point, but they never did. Ethan led them down a series of doors, which eventually led outside. They took to the forest and made their way back to Charlotte's car, being as silent as they could the whole time. No alarms rang, no guns were shot, and this made Evangeline think that something was wrong. There was no way they could escape that easily. They piled into the car, Charlotte and Evangeline in the front, Ethan, Sarah and Asher in the back. Charlotte drove as fast as she could. It was dark out, and she kept her car lights off until she reached a populated road.
"There's no way we could've gotten out of there that easily," Evangeline mentioned. They all nodded in agreement.
"They have to be planning something. There's got to be a bigger picture here. Ethan, if you're double crossing us I'll kill you." Charlotte glared at him in the mirror, and he put his hands up in defense.
"I have no idea what they're doing. I have my jobs, they have theirs."
"Why do you even work for them anyway. What's in it for you?" Sarah asked him. There was venom in her voice and she looked at him with hate. He looked at her with a mixture of hate and sadness.
"I do it for the money. Mom cant hold a job. And someone's gotta pay the bills. When I found out I could do this whole 'ghost thing' they found me and offered me a job. We need the money. And it pays well."
"So you do what exactly? Kidnap people?" Asher scoffed, wishing he could punch Ethan straight in the face. Ethan nodded.
"I find out if they like me, if they are, we take them to the compound. Run tests, that sort of thing. How strong their power is. Evangeline your one of the lucky ones, you didn't go through their tests." Evangeline turned around in her seat, facing Ethan.
"What do they test for?"
"How strong your power is. There's the normal people, the ones who can just see the ghosts and talk with them. And then there are others...the ones who have advanced powers."
"And where do you think I fall?" Ethan looked at her with a mixture of jealousy and sadness.
"You're lucky they didn't fully test you. I saw what you did with Brahms." He didn't elaborate any further.
"What happens if you're one of the advanced people? Do they even let us go?" He shook his head.
"You're trained to work with us. Finding others and testing out what you can do for research." Charlotte piped into the conversation.
"What happens if people don't want to work with you?"
"They're killed." He said it so casually, like it meant nothing. All eyes turned to look at him, even Charlotte glanced in the mirror while driving.
"You pretentious asshole. You just kill people? Just like that?"
"I mean... I don't kill them, the others do. We can't have too many people knowing about this." Evangeline snorted.
"Are you serious right now? Do you even hear yourself? Your taking people away from their friends...families. What if you decided not to work with them, and they killed you. Your sisters, and mother would have to live in a world without you. They wouldn't even know how you died. Your government 'friends' would probably make up some excuse. You're sick if you think that money is worth more than people's lives." Her breath had become shaky. She couldn't believe that he was ok with simply just killing people who didnt work with them. She looked at his face to see that it had become paler. Her words must have meant something to him. After a long pause in the car he finally spoke.
