Miles had barely pulled away from the kiss when Hunter had his arm around Mia's waist, successfully yanking her away from him so abruptly that her vodka soda jostled in her cup.

"I've been trying to reach you all day M," he kissed her forehead in greeting, his arm still securely fastened around her waist like an emergency belt as he directed all his attention to Miles now,

"What the fuck is going on here, Miles? Someone said you guys arrived here together?"

His voice was deceptively calm.

"Miller, chill. We were just hanging out okay? No big deal."
"Oh no," Minnie muttered under her breath as Hunter's eyes narrowed into slits.

"No big deal? Are you fucking serious? You didn't even say one word to me." He growled,

"Yeah well fuck that Hunter, I knew you would have said no anyways. You can't just hog her like she's yours forever," Miles hardly finished his sentence before Hunter was lunging at him like he was about to rip his head off but Mia placed a firm hand on his chest reflexively while Miles took a step back with trepidation.

Mia, having now placed herself between the two boys, stared Hunter down with a confused frown.
"What the hell is he talking about? What is there to say no to?" She asked, and Hunter's mouth opened hesitantly to answer but Miles beat him to it.

"I'm talking about the bullshit rule he has with the guys that we have to ask his permission before we can go out with you like he's Jesus or something." At that Hunter looked up at him again like he was ready to throw a punch but Mia's anger was already rising.

"Is that true? You have a rule about me?" She seethed, and everyone, including Minnie who was just as surprised looked at Hunter who seemed conflicted at how to answer under the sharp edge of Mia's glare.

"It's just a precautionary measure I-"
"God Hunter!" She gasped stepping back from him.
"Mia-" he reached for her arm but she dodged him and turned for the stairs,

"Hey she deserved to know," Miles said with a smug edge to his voice, and this time Hunter didn't hold back as he shoved Miles out of the way, making him stumble back and crash into a group of people,

"Stay out of our fucking business," He growled, and turned to follow Mia's route up the stairs.

•••••••••••

The door to the guest room slammed open to reveal Hunter only slightly out of breath from taking the long staircase two steps at a time. Mia was standing in the middle of the room and turned to face him with barely concealed anger,

"Why would you do that to me Hunter? Fucking explain why you would sabotage a potential relationship for me!" She gestured wildly with her hands as he shut the door behind him,

"I wasn't trying to-"

"Don't you care about me? Don't you want me to be happy?" She interrupted him and he looked taken aback.

"Of course I fucking care about you that's why I do it. Because I know that none of those guys can make you happy. They're not good enough."

"How would you know what's good enough for me?" Mia yelled back, struck dumb by his reasoning,

"You're my best friend of course I know-"

"And even if you did you know what gives you the right to make that decision for me?" She interrupted him again making him clench his jaw in frustration,

"You don't think I should get to decide what makes me happy-"
"You're not getting it, I know what these guys are like M, just trust me when I say they won't make you happy, they'll just fuck with you and hurt you and-"
