Dolores
Today is going to be the first time when I'm going to see my Madre since I started working for the kings.
Mr. King decided to give me a day off every Sunday, so that I can see her. I hope the treatment they are giving her works because she has been in a stagnant condition since we found out about her sickness. She took it really hard. I was also upset when we got the news but I knew I had to be strong for her. Her sickness was the main reason I decided to work for kings. There pay was better than the one I received from my previous employer.
I couldn't even afford it properly until Mr. King offered to pay for her treatment in one of the best hospitals here in the South of Italy. He also helped me to pay all of my debt to her previous hospital. I just hope that I get some good news even if it's not much.
I sighed as I entered the hospital doors.
The smell of all the antibacterial agents and antiseptics filled my nostrils. The typical hospitals smell I have gotten used to and grown to hate too. I walked up to the receptionist, gave her my mother's name and she showed me the way to her room after verifying who I was.
As I entered the room, everything looked different from when she was in the local hospital where we used to live before. She was no more connected to so many wires and she had slightly gained her colour back; she was no more abnormally pale. She looked healthy, it cheered me up and I sighed in relief.
All I could hear was the consistent sound of her heart monitor and her shallow, feather-light breathing. She was looking like a baby. She was sleeping like a baby. My mother was finally sleeping like a baby. She looks so adorable right now.
My insides did somersaults, I was ecstatic and I was in pure utter joy. God bless Mr. King and all the doctors here. They helped my mother to improve. I just hope she can be back to normal.
I was finally at some peace.
I didn't even knew I was shedding tears till my beautiful mother opened her eyes and spoke up,
"I just knew someone was in here with me but why are you crying mia figlia?"
I cleaned my cheeks, I was speechless and there were no words. I couldn't speak. For the first time in a very- very long time, I feel that there are no worries. I am earning good, my mother is improving, and both of us have a very good place to live and good food to eat. It feels good to forget some of my tension. Now there is only one problem left. Rafael. He has been constantly on my mind since that little moment in vineyard. I get butterflies in my stomach whenever I am near him. It's so frustrating. It's like my body has a mind of its own whenever he is near.
Sigh.
She eyed me from head to toe.
"Cara mia, you are glowing. Tell me your secret, who is it that is taking care of my baby and more importantly who's paying my bills?"
Immediately her tone changed from playful to strict. I always knew how strict she was sending me to a convent school with only girls, making sure I had no contact with boys. She has some strong morals which she makes sure is followed by her daughter too.
I smiled as I remembered her most favourite sentence.
"Boys of your age are very stupid. They think with their bad parts."
She would always make that statement, especially while brushing my hair after I come home for holidays.
I was snapped out of my reverie when she called my name
