William painted the last stroke of the stage skirt.
His experiment environment was set. The only thing he needed now is the test subjects.
He smirked knowingly. Then Henry's voice came through the phone.
"Afton? Afton, what are you up to?" his voice said almost dream-like. Then he started whispering.
William picked up the phone, "Henry? I don't remember this phone having an auto-answering feature...or speaker phone." The whispering stopped.
Afton set down the phone in confusion.
"Everything alright Dad?" Michael said as he walked over with some paint cans.
Afton looked at his son. "Uh...yeah. Totally fine don't worry about it."

The phone rang an hour later.
Afton shied away from the phone as Michael went to pick it up.
"Heyyyy, Afton Jr!" Henry exclaimed with a pep in his voice. "Is Afton Sr. there?"
Michael replied, "Yep! He's right here. Dad, the phone is for you." He handed his father the phone.
William took the phone very gingerly and said, "H-Hello?"
"What's happening Jack?" asked Henry.
"Who's Jack?" William was confused.
Henry replied, "Just a saying, Afton. Don't worry. How's the project going?"
"We're going to be opening next week Henry! The construction process was much swifter. Now it's just a little bit more paperwork and animatronic testing, then it will be ready."
"Wow that's great, Afton! How's the kids?"
William's face began to grow cold as he remembered how his children reacted to his wife leaving.

Elizabeth began sobbing as soon as their mother left the house.
Tristen was not old enough to understand. Michael stood incredibly still as he watched his mother's taxi arrive and take her stuff away. Afton himself only sat in the doorway soundless for the remainder of the next 2 hours. His children tried to move him from the door and even left him a TV dinner with him, but he did not budge.
Once Afton got up, his children were watching the telly. He didn't even send them to bed. Even though Tristen seemed to finally realize his mother was not returning and started crying in the middle of the night, he slept. When Elizabeth started trying to wake him early in the morning for breakfast, he slept. He only woke when Michael alerted him about Henry on the phone. When Afton got up, Michael also let him know that Tristen had been crying the entire night and Elizabeth quieted up enough to made a pot of oatmeal.
Afton took the phone from Michael and answered, "Henry? You need to stop calling me so early."
"It's...10 AM over where you are Afton. Are you okay?" said Henry with a slight tone of worry.
Afton hesitated before responding. "My uh....wife left me and the kids. For good." Elizabeth began to cry again.
"William, I'm sorry for your loss. Look if you want to pause on the project, that's fine. Construction will still take a bit longer over here so it's fine if-"
"No. I'm continuing as planned. Circus Baby's Pizza World should open on time. Don't worry about me, Henry."
There was a long pause before Henry replied, "Well buddy, make sure you aren't overworking yourself. I'll call again in another week to check up on ya." The phone line went dead.
Elizabeth kept crying. Afton wheeled around and yelled, "So help me young lady, I will make sure you don't leave this house without feeling pain if that awful din does not quiet!" His eyes were full of fire.
She began to whimper as Michael stood between them and stared his father down.
Afton pushed him to the side with great force. Michael flew into the cabinet and hit his head.
He laid there unconscious as Afton stormed out of the kitchen.

"Uh...." William described, "It wasn't the best but we've been making it work."
Henry said, "Great to hear Afton! I'll call back on the opening day. Peace!"
"Peace?" Afton replied before hanging up the phone, "Americans are very very interesting, Michael."
"I can see that, dad, "Michael replied before laughing.
