Max wasn't home when it started, so he had no chance to find his family. He concluded that they had probably died or gone on without him so he decided I go in search for somebody else.
Max stole a car, robbed a few grocery stores, gathered a few hundred litres of petrol and grabbed anything that had the potential to be a weapon. He now knew where he had to go, to find the only person who cared about him.
He drove for a few hours. He had been on a camp in another state when it started so he wasn't close to home. He kept praying that she was okay, even though he was certain she would be alive. As he drove he past burning towns and dead bodies.
Max had been at a camp for his ADHD. The camp was supposed to help him with his concentration and learning skills and stop him from being irresponsible. It didn't seem to help him much but it got him away from his abusive family for a few weeks so he didn't mind.
Every now and then he would run over something that wasn't quite human. Of course, it would have human features such as arms and legs and all that but the way it acted would show that they were different. They're more blood thirsty and threatening then humans are.
It was an infection that had started this whole situation. It had spread through every country in less then twelve hours and had killed off large amounts of the population. Luckily, Australia was the last continent for it to arrive in, so they had time to prepare themselves. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough time.
As Max drove along, he came across a border collie running from a few of the diseased people. Max helped it out by letting it in the car and bringing it along with him. He ended up naming the dog Freak for no apparent reason, it just suited the dog. The dog was a male and barked at almost everything that moved. Good for security, but not good if you're trying to hide.
Max and Freak drove along roads that seemed to last forever. Every few minutes he would pass one of the diseased or find someone dead on the side of the road. Some where even living and chased after the car, begging Max for a lift but he wasn't stopping for anybody but Abigail.
"Freak, do you reckon anybody will be alive? Like I mean, if we survived, then surely somebody else did too? Right?" Max said. Freak just barked at him happily. "Yeah, you're a dog, I know you can't understand me." Max stared at the dog for a few second, then back at the road, then back to the dog, "Why are you so damn happy, Freak?"
Max knew that if he didn't get to Abigail in time, she would be dead by the time he got to her. He drove the roads at about 150km per hour. He would never slow down, not even for potholes or living people who needed help. He would simply run over any diseased and potentially injure them.
Max probably killed about twenty something diseased during his four hours spent driving and injured around sixty. He probably saved a few lives of hitchhikers along the way, but he most likely had the same amount killed by leaving them behind. Either way he was slowly removing the population of potential danger and threats.
He had nearly arrived at his home town when somebody injured kneeled down in the middle of the road, he slowed down his car to try pass him, as he didn't plan to help the man out. The man realised that max wasn't going to stop so he pulled a pistol. He fired about four shots and hit one of Max's back tires. Max skidded out but ended up facing in the direction of the man. He out his foot down on the peddle and sped forward. The man tried leaping out of the way but he was to slow. Max hit the man and killed him.
Max was driving a car that only had three usable tires. He had a spare tire but he didn't have any time to change it yet. He drove slowly so that he could keep control of the car.
He arrived in his home town, which seemed pretty isolated. Nobody was around, Human or diseased, which creeped Max out even more. "Freak. You better fucking bark at any danger or we'll both die." Max demanded with a tone of fear in his voice. He left the car and began walking cautiously around the town he used to call home.
