Abigail sat up suddenly, sweating out of fear after waking from a horrific nightmare. "Max?" She yelled out. "Max!" She yelled. Ella woke by her side, "Abigail! Max is fine." She said soothingly, "He... He died!" Abigail responded, half asleep. "You were just having a nightmare. Max is alive." Ella said, trying to calm her down. "You don't know that. For all we know everybody could be dead right now and we're the only survivors." Abigail said, freaking out. "I doubt our chances," Ella said, "But if we are then we should at least make the most of life, so calm down before you attract any unwanted attention." Abigail nodded, "Sorry, Ella, I really am."
They walked alongside the road alone. "I don't think Daniel will be bothering us anytime soon." Ella said, almost happily. "How are you so chill? Your boyfriend just used you to save his own ass." Abigail said angrily. "He's not my boyfriend." Ella responded confidently. "Yeah, whatever. Let's just hope he doesn't find us anytime soon." Abigail said. Ella shushed Abigail. "Excuse me?" Ella looked at her, "Be quiet." Abigail looked offended, "I know you guys aren't.." Ella cut her off, "Someone's coming!" Ella yelled.
The girls tried to find a place to hide but they couldn't find one quick enough so they just ran. The car caught up with them, but it wasn't Daniel or any of the men they saw the night before. "Running from those guys? The ones kidnapping and whatever. I heard a couple of teenagers got away." The driver said. The driver was a male, about forty years old. "Don't mistake me for one of them. I have, I guess, a team, and out goal is to rescue as many people as possible from threats like them. Here let me give you a ride to wherever you're going, it's the least I can do." The man said. Abigail looked at Ella cautiously, "It's our best chance." Ella said, opening the door and getting inside the car. Abigail followed uncertain.
They drove for a while before getting back to Abigail's home town, "Maybe Max is here." Abigail whispered in Ella's ear, "What are the chances?" Ella asked but Abigail wasn't listening. "Drop us off here." Abigail told the driver. He started to slow down, "Looking for a boy?" The driver asked. "Looking for a friend." Abigail corrected him. "Fair enough," the driver said as they both stepped out of the car, "Good luck to both of you. If you need anything I come into town every week on Friday." The driver said. "What's your name?" Abigail asked. "I'm Jonah, and you are?" Abigail hesitated, "Faith, and this is Jane." Abigail lied. "Shame, I guess I haven't earned your trust. Well anyway, I should get moving. Good luck and goodbye." Jonah said before driving forward.
Abigail and Ella watched as he drove away. He sped up but only managed to travel about two hundred metres before his car was dominated by diseased. Together, the diseased managed to break through his front window and pull him out of the car. He yelled out to the girls, "Run!" Were the words the managed to make out from his muffled yell. They were to shocked to move, so they stood there as still as statues. They watched as Jonah got bitten. They watched as he turned into one of the diseased. It wasn't until the diseased started to run towards them that they realised they should listen to Jonah and run.
They ran to the closest building they could find, which was a bakery only metres away. They look back at the window and see that none of the diseased had made it to the front door, which, unfortunately for them, was made from glass, and it didn't look very strong. They turned away from the door to find a woman, only about five foot tall, running towards them. The woman grabbed onto Abigail's arms and started shaking her around, yelling, "Save me! I cannot die." She had an accent but neither Abigail or Ella could figure out what it was. Abigail didn't know what to do, but Ella did something that meant Abigail didn't have to do anything. Ella had found a pan and whacked the crazy woman over the head twice. The woman let go of Abigail's arms and fell against the wall with a loud thud, the same loud thud they heard when the diseased started to bang on the door outside.
Abigail and Ella left through the back door of the bakery, piling as many objects as they could to stop the diseased from getting through. They walked out onto the back street to find five four-wheel-drives parked in a line in front of the grocery store. "Do you know what that means?" Abigail asked Ella. "That we have trouble." Ella guessed, "No, it means we have a car." Abigail corrected her. "We don't have the keys and we don't know how to drive." Ella said. Abigail corrected her again, "You don't know how to drive and I don't need the keys, Max taught me almost everything about stealing a car, I didn't think I'd ever use it but why put my knowledge to waste." Abigail said, walking towards the car. Ella followed unsure that Abigail's plan would work.
As Abigail inspected the cars, looking to find which one suited their needs best, Ella stood watch to make sure the owners of the cars didn't come out of the store and notice them. Fortunately for them, the car owners didn't come out of the store before Abigail found a car. "Over here! Windows down, easy entry. Few supplies in the back, same as the others. Few weapons that we are capable of using, sounds like our car!" Abigail said as she called Ella over. Abigail climbed through the car window easily, Ella followed, watching Abigail pull out the cables.
Just before Abigail could start to work on the cables, the girls both started to hear voices coming from the direction of the grocery store. "Quick! Get out!" Abigail whispered. "Can't! They'll see us!" Ella responded, pushing Abigail into the back seat. "Hide behind the back seat." Ella demanded. Abigail obeyed and Ella followed. They laid down for not even ten seconds before the first car door opened. "It's a shame they had no supplies in there," one of the people said. The person who spoke was a male judging from the tone of his voice. The next person to speak was definitely a female, speaking in a high-pitched, annoying tone. "They had supplies, I know they did. But if we can't have them they can't either."
The car started the same time an explosion went off. Ella nearly screamed but Abigail stopped her just in time. "I told you, if we can't have them, they can't have them," said the woman's voice. A new voice spoke next, the tone was deep and sounded dangerous. He spoke slowly and softly, "The more we kill now, the less we have to deal with later."
