Everybody seemed to be mad at Abigail and Ella. They treated them as if they'd done something unforgivable. "All I did was speak the truth." Abigail said. "All they did was speak with negativity. They just need to learn to see the good in these kind of situations." Ella stated. "Well there isn't any 'good' but there is hope" Abigail pointed out.
Abigail started keeping a diary. She didn't know why. She didn't want to remember the times she was going through but she though it would help someone find her or something in the future.
'Dear Diary..' Abigail crossed it out furiously, it just didn't feel like a way to start writing. 'The first day of this crisis is coming to an end. Night will fall over us soon and we'll be trapped in darkness, hoping we aren't attacked by these creatures that the adults are calling infected and diseased. Some are calling them impure but the word they refuse to use, which describes these creatures in many ways, is Zombies.' She stopped for a moment. She re-read what she had written then it dawned on her, this was an apocalypse.
"Ella! Where's Ella!" She had run into one of the adults meetings. "Get out Abigail! We're having a meeting! Ella is probably out at the dam or something." Abigail left them room eager to find Ella. She then processed through her mind that the adults didn't want her to hear what they were talking about, so she went back and listened carefully through the door.
"Well we'll have to discuss that next time but I'm glad that we clarified that. Now we just need to do that and we can get rid of them, they'll only make this situation worse. Everybody, goodbye." Everybody was about to leave the room and Abigail had nowhere to hide. She started running down a corridor looking for a place to hide. She couldn't find one but she had ran far enough to persuade the adults that she hadn't heard anything.
She found Ella swimming in the dam alone. "Ella, they want to get rid of us." Ella didn't hear her. "Ella!" She yelled. Ella heard her this time and swam over, "What?" Abigail was shaking and panting, "They want to get rid of us. Kill us off or throw us off for the infected too." Ella didn't say anything for about a minute, "Who said this?" Abigail was about to cry. "Our parents."
They started to pack their stuff. Abigail packed some clothes, perfume and her diary. Ella packed her hairbrush, clothes and a stress ball. They both packed food and water as well so they wouldn't starve it dehydrate. "Do you really think we should leave?" Ella questioned. "It's either certain death or possible survival." Abi replied. Ella nodded but still proceeded to argue "Certain death sounds less scary, but we can leave I guess."
They his their bags under their beds. It was no use trying to escape during the day, so they were going to wait for night. "Should we go after dinner or when everybody's in bed?" Abigail asked. "You should've organised this before suggesting it." Ella responded. "We'll leave when everybody's asleep then." Abigail concluded.
Dinner came quickly, the food was already becoming limited and people were still hungry after finishing their meals. It was quiet, nobody talked, mainly in an attempt to avoid arguments and yelling which could attract any nearby diseased.
"Are they zombies?" Abigail blurted out, breaking the silence of dinner. "Honey... Zombies rise from the dead. These things are diseased. Not zombies" Abigail's dad answered. "So they aren't zombies.. But.. What do they want from us?" Abigail's mother put down her cutlery, "We don't know, but when we find out, we'll tell you."
Dinner finished and time for sleep came quickly. The girls were tired but they were still determined to leave. They laid in bed for nearly an hour before getting up, grabbing their stuff and tip-toeing out the door. There was only one person on guard duty so they managed to sneak past him easily.
As they made it to the outside, the followed the dirt road for a few kilometres before running off into the forest for hiding. They found a hollow tree to sleep in. They blocked the entrance with their bags and went to sleep.
