Place: Chemistry Laboratory
Time: 13 00
Objective: Benzene ring
'All the bonds in the benzene ring are equal in length and in strength; shorter than pure single bonds and longer than pure double bonds.'
Mrs. Wong was dictating us the notes while drawing the hexagonal figure with the ring in it on the blackboard. It was pretty hard drawing the 3D diagram on the 2D platform but I don't really think she cares how weird it ends up as long as we understand.
The old Chinese lady worked as a researcher in the South east of China before retiring to work as a teacher here. She was one of the cutest teachers in the school: short, old, wise with her sarcastic jokes and sweet smile. Though I hated Chemistry she has the knack to make the class interesting and make us participate. It could be fun, especially when one of her sarcastic comments comes up.
We were right in the middle of the class going through the halogeno alkanes when you know who came up to the door. He knocked (pretty well mannered if you ask me) and gave a slip of paper to our teacher. (Please don't make him shift to this class!)
'Class, this is Blaze Carter. He missed his Chemistry lessons earlier and asked to come up to this class to catch up. Well, Mr. Carter, grab a seat. We are going through the halogeno compounds.'
Blaze looked around the class and his eyes landed on me (talk about my luck! Please do note the high hint of sarcasm). He walked towards me and took the seat behind mine.
'Chlorobenzene does not undergo hydrolysis or any nucleophilic substitutions because of the overlapping of the p electrons of chlorine with the system of the benzene.
Mrs. Wong kept on talking, oblivious to my annoyance. I could feel someone's eyes on me (take a lucky guess). The boy was trying to make holes in my back!
My thoughts drifted away to how Blaze was the benzene ring and I was the poor chlorine atom being trapped (well not literally, I'm totally free, you know what I mean) by the system of benzene, his stupid obsessive quest to find Bluespider. (J'ai d'autre chat à fouetter.) This weird formed bond is going to be hard to break.
~J'ai d'autre chat à fouetter. = I have better things to do.~
