Walking into the cold, white walled, building felt emptier on this Monday morning. It felt as if, something was missing and I already knew it wasn't going to be a good day.
I waited and waited for Ashton's tall frame to walk through the door in first period, but his presence never came. I became upset, wondering about the small talk we might've made. The awkward glances and not knowing where our relationship lies. Being away from Ashton made me think so much, and then I had finally realized, I didn't keep my promise. The promise that every day we would just sit together, in silence, and he would wrap his protective arms around me and relax in my arms. Breaking that promise was the worst thing that could ever happen.
I walked up to my metal locker and sloppily turned the lock to the correct numbers. I lifted the latch and swung open the door without catching.
"Ow, God!" Quickly, I moved the locker door to the side, almost closing it and examined the person I hit.
"Oh-oh I'm so sorry." I laughed and touched my fingers to the palm that he was covering his eye with.
"It's okay." He laughed along with me before he removed his hand. My fingers lightly tapped the skin under his blue eye, which was red and the skin was swollen.
"No it's not, I just smacked you with my locker. Maybe if you weren't so tall we wouldn't have this problem." I joked.
Once again, he laughed and I smiled in response.
"This is that new kid reputation now isn't it?" He mumbled, loud enough for me to hear though.
"You're new?"
"Second day." He nodded as he spoke.
"You must be too?" He asked.
"I guess. I've been here for a month now." I shrugged continuing to fix his eye.
"Ah, so you must get all the guys right?" I laughed, tilting my head back and he shrugged, adding a small smile, and a tint of red heated his cheeks.
"Can I get you a cold cloth or something uh...."
"Luke."
"Luke, I'm Josie." I held out my hand for him to shake and he firmly did.
"And yes, something would be nice." He pulled a small smile before resting against the locker.
I pulled a napkin from my lunch sack before crossing the path to the water fountain and folding the napkin uni a small square. I ran the napkin under the water before going back over to Luke.
Guiding the wet cloth across his throbbing eye, he couldn't take his other off of me. As hard as I tried, I remained my gaze on the injured eye, and now that we're the only two in the hallway, my body gradually tensed, becoming uncomfortable being alone with him. Opposite of how I feel with Ashton.
"You know what else would be nice, Josie?" I hummed in response.
"Your number."
My eyes darted in his direction before carefully taking off the cold patch. Once again, I, more rapidly, crossed the path to the trash can and direction my feet towards the cafeteria, where Calum and Ruthie should be waiting for me.
"Hey!" He called after me and I heard a squeak of a shoe against the floor. I quickened my pace before his long legs reached me, and stopped me.
"Hey, hey. I'm sorry. Just...trying to make some friends." I glared up at him.
"It's obvious you want to be something other than friends," I shoved past him and he caught up to me again.
"What do you have a boyfriend or something?" His bright blue eyes begging for an answer almost.
I sighed,"Its-"
"Complicated." He finished and my reaction backed off slightly.
"You wouldn't believe how many times I've heard it and it's been a lie."
"But I'm not lying."
"Then where is he? I don't see any guy!" He opened his arms to the space around him. I really wish Ashton would appear out of nowhere and rescue me from this nightmare and this would all be over and we would go home and figure things out but that's not the real world.
"I don't know where he is today and I already told you things are complicated so I don't want to talk about it."
"One date." He emerged closer quickly.
"No." I shoved past him once again before his broad shoulders tensed and he gripped mine with his palms.
"One...date..." He sighed. I closed my eyes and swallowed hard, hoping to wake up, but it's a nightmare that has become my reality and I don't know what to say.
Saying yes will make Luke happy and it'll prove everyone that has rejected him wrong, but Ashton will beat the shit out of him. And if I say no, Luke won't ever talk to me again. And I want to be friends with Luke, not only because I owe him for smashing my door in his face, but because I'm being rude.
"You know what," I sighed,"sure." A smile flashed on his face and his lip ring moved.
"Oh my gosh okay." He ran his fingers through his hair before pulling out his phone.
"C-can you like, uh," I giggled and took the phone from his hand,"yeah, phone, yeah that, number, yeah."
I typed my number and handed him his phone back.
"Now excuse me freakishly tall dork I have to go to lunch with the remaining five minutes I have left." I walked past him. I turned and saw him fingers supporting his neck as he spun once in a circle before turning a corner down the hall.
Ashton is going to kill me.
