I hadn't moved from the kitchen counter since Ashton left. It began to get dark quickly and the rain poured, but I tuned it out as my thoughts filled with problems. But my main one was between two boys out of god knows what else is going on.
Luke, he's the boy you want to take to meet your parents and he's the one to take you to the carnival and win you a stuffed bear and hold your hand on rides.
Ashton, he's the boy you want to run away with and sneak out at midnight. And he's the one who takes things to the next level.
Then again, there's Luke, he's so sweet and I really like him.
But then there's Ashton, the boy who just won't leave. And I feel so guilty for everything that happened with Luke, I regret every second of it. That's not the way you're supposed to feel after that happens. You're supposed to feel excited and happy, but that's just not how it is.
But the problem is, I can't stay away. I have more fun and it's so fast. Life is more of a thrill with Ashton, you never know where it's gonna take you or what kind of trouble is coming next. He's the one who makes you feel alive and you just wanna leave town and be alone with him whenever you catch his eye.
I've never noticed people like I have like Ashton before. I feel so different than previous places, and I'm surprisingly enjoying it.
But my positivity ran short when I noticed a soaking, injuring boy stumbling in the house.
"Ash..." I hopped from the counter and quickly rushed to his aid, but he pushed me away as he skimmed past me to reach for a pack of peas in the freezer.
"Ash what happened?" I asked as the cold peas were placed on his eye.
He grunted at me before turning to the living room and plopping on the couch.
"D-did you get it-"
"No I didn't get it, what do you think!" I knew I was going to regret asking. I slowly walked over to the chair opposite of the couch and sat down.
"What did they do to you?"
"Gave me a fucking black eye, are you blind?" He shut both of his eyes and I could tell he was trying to mask the pain, I wasn't going to just sit here and watch him crack.
My delicate hands reached and removed the peas from his eye. I lightly pressed my fingers around his eye and he flinched and I jumped, surprised by his reaction.
"It's throbbing."
"No shit." He forcefully placed the cold pack on his eye again and sighed.
"Smashing things on it isn't gonna help, and neither will a frozen pack of peas." I stood and paved over to the kitchen sink. I grabbed a paper towel and rinsed it with the coldest water before rushing back over and replacing the peas with the ice pack.
"Just, get some rest." I stood away from him and strode to the exit, not knowing where my feet were taking me, but Ashton filled his house with his own tension, and it was suffocating.
-
My first step outside was cold. I pulled up the hood to the sweatshirt I was given and started to run. I was going to try to find my way to my house, but I was failing because I was looking at the ground the whole time.
Hopelessness consumed me as I slowed down and decided to give up. My tired legs plopped on the curb and I brought my cold body in itself while shivering so hard my teeth clattered.
"Josie, get in here. This is ridiculous." I looked up from my wet eyelashes and completely forgot that he lived here.
I thanked Calum for living in this neighborhood and jogged to the passenger side before hopping in.
"Round number two of rescuing you from a jerk who can't treat you right."
Please don't call him a jerk you don't know what's really going on with him. I wanted to explain so badly, but instead I flashed him a half, sympathetic smile.
Calum shook his head in shame towards Ashton as he began to drive out of the luxurious neighborhood.
-
"Um, thanks for the ride." I held my arms across my body still as he was parked on my driveway.
"Why didn't you call me?"
"It's a long story." The car remained in an awkward silence as neither of us knowing what to say. It also seemed like a terrible time to just meekly thank him then leave.
"You know what I need..." I blurted. Calum's eyebrows raised.
"I need a friend. Can you do that? Can you just be my friend?" It was my turn to raise my eyebrows at him. Calum sighed and looked down at his lap.
"You know that guy got a girl pregnant, right?"
"I'm well aware. Please, just..." I couldn't find the right words to say as I ran my fingers through my wet and smelly hair,"just, be someone I can talk to about stupid things and who I can call just to hang out and catch up. No more crushes, no more.... I don't know, just please, please be my friend." I was begging now apparently, my speech took over my brain and just started spitting words.
"Yeah, I'd really like that." He gave me a grin with his lips and I thanked him for the ride before getting out, and walking into my house where I was greeted with a towel once my appearance was taken in by Claire and Rob.
"Oh sweetie, you must be freezing, come on I'll make you some hot tea." She took my hand and I scanned the room as Claire began to make the tea.
The family were all sat at the dining room table and a large folder was under Rob's arms.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when Claire's hand was on my back and pushing me in the dining room and a hot mug of tea was placed in my hands.
Claire sat me in a chair and she sat next to Rob, taking his hand in hers. Quinn and Kendall we're dressed in nice dresses and Kendall was distracted by her feet and I could see them swinging. Quinn just stared at me as she bit hard on her lip.
"Josie, we would all like to know," Claire smiled and took the folder from under Rob's arm.
"If you would like to be adopted."
