Ashton

Ashton Irwin was his name.

Ashton Irwin was the one who actually cared about my life for once.

"Josie?" He tilted his head to the side.

"Mm yeah sorry."

"I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?" I nodded with a small smile in reply and Ashton stood up quickly. I understood that he wanted distance away from me. Everyone does.

My eyes followed him as he went over to his friends. A few of them pointed in my direction and laughed. I just put my focus back on the brown sack of lunch I carried to school. I picked at the bread and fiddled with the water bottle cap before taking a sip from it.

"You look like you could use someone to sit with." Calum had sat down next to me. A small smile grew across my lips.

"I could use someone to sit with."

"That's why I'm here." He rubbed my back and I rested my elbows on the table.

"Thanks. But you really can go sit with your friends."

"I am." I looked back down to my food and played with my grapes before Calum picked one up and ate it.

I smacked his arm and we both slightly laughed.

"Now I have one less grape."

"Sorry."

"You should be." The bell rang and Calum and I both looked towards the school.

I groaned with pain as the building of hell flooded with teenagers who were no longer hungry.

"We should probably go." I said picking up my trash and throwing it away.

--

I rode the bus in the second seat to the front home. I tucked my knees into my chest and listened to music the entire way.

No one acknowledged me, no one talked to me, no one could even glance my way or introduce themselves.

I stepped off the bus, being the only person getting off at this stop. I shoved my hands into the pockets of my jacket and continued my way towards my new home.

I entered the heated home and felt grateful for the warmth. It smelled of cookies. I smiled to myself.

"How was school today?" I was asked as I sat at the counter. I shrugged and picked up the apple sitting on the plate. I took a bite out of the side and sighed.

"Homework?" I nodded and walked over to the fridge, grabbing a water bottle.

"Well, I'll be in the living room folding laundry. You can help yourself to any snacks you'd like. Don't eat too much though, save some room for homemade pizza night!" I 'wow'ed my expression with my eyes and collected my items, heading for my room.

I laid down on my cool bed and turned on the lamp. No relaxing, I need to get started on my homework.

-

"Josie! Wanna come make your pizza?" I was called from the kitchen. I shuffled my books away from my lap and pushed myself out of bed, trudging into the kitchen.

"Okay. First pick your dough." I just picked a random pile of beige squishy stuff and slapped it onto the counter.

"Okay now roll it out." She handed me a rolling pin. I began to roll it back and forth until I got it the size I wanted.

"Hey dad watch this!" Quinn said as she threw her pizza in the air and she caught it right back again. We all clapped and her dad high fived her.

"Wanna give it a shot?" Quinn nudged me.

"I guess." I shrugged.

I threw the pizza in the air, it spun, and it landed on my face. Everyone laughed as I peeled it off. I don't know if I should be offended or laugh along with them. It was probably a funny sight, so I continued along with their laughter, for the first time ever.

Dinner tonight was everything I wished I had. We laughed, we danced to music, we sang, we threw pizza in the air. Everyone was kind to each other. Everyone got along.

I was back again sitting on my bed, with a school book in my hand we have to read.

"Contacts!" I reminded myself as I stood up and walked towards the bathroom. The home phone began to ring and I heard Claire pick it up. Soon, footsteps began growing closer towards my door and a knock sounded from the wood.

"Yes?" Claire peered into my room.

"Don't mean to bother you dear, but a boy from school is on the phone." She said as one finger rested on my eye.

"Uh huh, ok thank you!"

"Do you wanna take it?" I nodded. She came over and rested the phone on the bathroom counter. I pressed the speaker phone button.

"Hello?" I asked in an awkward time as I was trying to get my second contact out.

"Josie? It's Ashton." I tried to grab the phone, but my foot only tangled in the bathroom rug and I slipped.

"Josie?" Ashton stated once again. I quickly regained myself to my feet and unpressed speaker phone.

"Hi." I breathed heavily.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, I just tripped taking out my contacts." He laughed.

"Probably shouldn't have said that." I said out loud.

"It's ok. I was just wondering if you wanted to talk about the project."

"The project right. Um, I was just getting ready for bed actually. Can we meet at lunch or something?" Ashton was hesitating.

"Yeah, uh, scratch the whole meeting up at school thing. How about, like, after school. Your house maybe?" My eyes grew wide and my like wen silent.

"Still there?" He asked.

"Oh. I'll have to ask my foster mom. I'll just let you know in first period or something."

"Maybe." He stated, I could hear his discomfort.

"Goodnight Josie. Don't break any bones." He hung up.

That was weird.
