𝑻𝒘𝒐 long years had passed, my eighteenth birthday recently passed. As everyday passed, I wondered more and more why no one had ever bailed me out. I never received one visitor while in the cooler, but soon enough I would get my answer.
I stared off into space, facing away from the bars of my hell. The sound of jingling brought my out of my thoughts. I slowly look behind, and saw a cop opening my cell. "You are free to go Curtis." Officer Cooper said, he sounded happy about it. I did give him hell every second of the day so I don't blame him.
I walked out with a smirk on my face, I get to see my mother and father, my brothers, and my best friends. The question still flew around in my mind, why didn't they come after me? What did I do? They always come to bail me out. Hell even Dally didn't come visit, and he was my partner in crime, literally.
I slowly drifted out of my head when I saw my home in the distance. It was a Sunday morning, so everyone should be home.
I walked up the steps, and took a deep breath. My hand touched the knob, and I slowly opened the door. In seconds, all eyes were on me.
On the couch I saw Dally sitting with Johnny. I noticed Two-Bit in front of the television, of course his eyes were glued to Mickey Mouse, at least that didn't change. I looked towards the kitchen, and Ponyboy was reading a book, and had papers in front of him, so I assume he is doing homework.
I smelled eggs and bacon, so Darry is definitely here. Across from Pony I noticed Steve and Soda arm wrestling. Nothing had changed, except I noticed something was obviously missing.
"Zaybra?" Dally questioned, probably thinking I was a figment of his imagination. The house went from loud to dead silence moments after my nickname was said.
"Guess who is home!" I yelled. I ran up to Johnny and messed up his hair, with him swiftly batting my hand away. "Zaybra you know I hate that!" he yells. That kid will only ever yell at me, he was always a quiet kid.
I looked towards the corridor of the kitchen and saw all three of my brothers standing there. Pony had a cold look in his eyes, as if he hated the world. Soda smiled, but I saw despair. Darry look exhausted, he was only twenty, but he looked older than that.
Then realization hit me, my parents aren't here.
"Where is mom? Where is dad?" I asked, my smile fading away. I saw Pony look me straight in the eyes, and he walked towards me until we stood face to face.
"They are dead." He whispered
Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead? Dead!? The words repeated continuously in my head, and I couldn't get it to stop.
"What do you mean they are dead?" I managed to say, still trying to process the situation. From the corner of my eye I noticed Two-Bit look away from the television, with a sad expression on his face. I have only ever seen him with a sad look once, when his sister Brenda passed away.
"They died the night you guys got arrested. They came home from their picnic, and got the call that you and Dal got hauled in. Mom and dad got in the car to pick you up, and got in a wreck." Pony said, choking on his tears.
My mouth fell open, I didn't know what to say. Before I could finish processing what he had said, I was on the floor. I looked up and I realized. Ponyboy punched me.
"It is all YOUR fault that mom and dad are dead, if you were actually a good person they would still be alive. They raised human trash like you, they coulda got rid of ya but they loved you too much. I wish they got rid of you, because if you weren't here, they would be here." he yelled while sobbing.
I swiftly stood up, glancing around the room. I looked towards my oldest brother Darry, and he looked towards the back door. I shoved Pony out of my way and made it out into the backyard.
A few minutes passed until I heard the door creak open, and Darry sat next to me on the steps.
"I don't blame you kid. Pony does however, he never got over their deaths. When they died he said he wished it were you, and not them. He will come around eventually sis, you just gotta give it time." Darry softly said. I nodded, looking up at the sky.
"Why did no one visit me?" I asked. He looked over and stared for a moment before responding. "We knew it would teach you a lesson." He bluntly said.
"A lesson?" I said, making it sound like a question.
"Ya, you needed to see we won't always be there to get you out of hell. We have our own personal hells Zaybra. You need to grow up." He said.
Darry was right, I need to get my shit together, I fucked up a lot of stuff and I need to fix it. I knew a lot of people didn't exactly want me around right now, but they let Dally stick around, so it would be time until they were comfortable with me again.
"I am gonna head out Darry." I said giving him a hug, before he could respond I ran inside. Before anyone could question me I was out the front door, speed walking down the street.
I didn't very far until I heard loud footsteps behind me, and I heard a raspy voice. I started to walk faster, I didn't have a blade on me.
Before I could start running I felt a hand on my shoulder.
