Keiran was waiting for his mother who was in the kitchen. They had decided to watch a movie together since they wanted to spend more time with each other.
After a minute or two, she entered the living room, holding a big bowl of popcorns. She sat down on the couch and glanced at Keiran, who was busy looking at his phone screen.
She quietly played the movie. The whole time Keiran was paying more attention to his phone. Suddenly his mother nudged him hard with her elbow.
"Ouch! MOM!" Keiran complained, rubbing the spot she had hurt, staring at his mother in annoyance.
"You were supposed to laugh at this scene but you were too busy staring at your phone,” she said, pausing the movie.
"Mom, I've watched Home Alone at least 500 times. You should update your movie collection," he said, chuckling.
His mother rolled her eyes. "Whatever, but can you at least put that phone away for a second? Whenever that special person texts you, the phone will blink automatically. You don't need to stare at it like that."
Keiran just looked at his mother. "She's not picking up her phone. I've been calling her since last night," Keiran said in a disappointed tone. "That day when she wore the dress I bought for her, I was so stunned that I didn't praise her," Keiran said while replaying the scene in his head.
His mother smiled at his son’s comment but then her expression changed; it became serious, as if she had remembered something.
"Keiran!" She exclaimed. Keiran just looked at her.
"You remember what happened last time right?" She asked, raising an eye brow. Keiran’s mouth sealed tightly. He was just looking at his mother; he didn't want to hear it.
"You were acting the same way when you and Caroline where together. Waiting for her calls, praising her all the time, etcetera etcetera—"
"MOM! She's nothing like Caroline. There’s no comparison, for God’s sake," Keiran sighed in exasperation, his voice rising a bit.
"I know, I know, but—" Keiran wasn't letting his mother speak for another second.
"Mom, she's nothing like Caroline, okay? I know Belle. She's never going to think like Caroline," Keiran assured her quickly.
Just then, his mother was about to say something, but Keiran’s phone started ringing. He quickly picked up his phone from his lap without looking at the ID he answered it.
"Hey, I called you, like, 200 times. It’s been two days. Where’ve you been?" Keiran asked hurriedly. He quickly stood up from the couch and started walking towards his room.
He glanced at his mother one last time before closing the door.
"Why weren't you picking up the phone?" Keiran was talking non-stop.
"Ah!" Belle was speechless. She didn't want to tell him that she was embarrassed to talk to him after making the muffins and wearing the dress.
"I was uhm-ah-"
She was about to make an excuse but Keiran cut her off and said "Belle, you looked beautiful in that dress, by the way." Keiran’s mind and tongue were working too fast.
"Oh, thanks," Belle said, smiling and blushing. She wasn't expecting a compliment at a time like this. A second ago, he was complaining and then, out of the blue, he praised her.
"Did you like the muffins?” Belle asked, feeling a bit nervous.
She heard him chuckle "Honestly speaking, I haven't tried them yet",
"What? Why? Did they look disgusting?" Belle asked, shocked and worried.
Keiran laughed at her reaction. "Hell no. I didn't try them because they looked so nicely decorated; I didn't want to ruin them.”
"Oh, you should eat them quickly before ants attack them."
"Oh, don’t worry I have them hidden in a place where no one can even look at them," Keiran said in a proud tone.
Belle smiled, "Uhm, okay then. Talk to you later."
Keiran’s smile fell immediately after hearing those words; he wanted to talk to her for a longer time.
"Uhm, okay," He replied, a bit of sadness in his voice.
"Goodnight," Belle said softly.
"I miss you," Keiran said bluntly.
Belle heard him but didn't say anything. She hung up.
Keiran was still holding the phone waiting for her reply but she didn't say anything back.
Keiran bit his lower lip in disappointment, a bit of embarrassment making his cheeks turn pink..
On the other hand, Belle, after hanging up, was still holding the phone in her hand. She was quiet and her eyes were fully focused on the screen.
"I miss you too," she whispered softly to the empty room.
